And hopefully, with thefoils are closed, you'd have much less maneuverability.

Will they have hyperdrives like Luke's? Do we have to buy an R2 unit to place in the ships?

Lol, I love the total lack of physics behind closing some wing pattern in space and your ship sudden;y speeds up =P You could open a parachute behind you in space and you wouldn't slow down =P Oh well, an insteresting feature anyways. I just hope like other games it takes 2-3 seconds for the S-Foils to Open/Close so that using this feature is not a wise idea once combat has begun.

I'm sure it could be explained that having the S-foils open causes the ship to drain energy from the engines and put it in something else, say weapons. And to explain the inertia drop, they might decide to throw on reverse thrusters when S-foils are opened at first. It's not too far a stretch to arrive at these explanations, but one would think that you could control the flow of energy and control your own thrusters. We shall see.

In true space physics, the only speed limit is light speed. Putting more power to engines would make you accelerate more, but your top speed remains fixed at some significant percentage of light speed, depending on your mass.

So really, driving power twards the engine wouldn't make you just "go faster", but rather "get up to speed faster".

Star Wars has never demonstrated true space physics, so I suggest accepting the physics model you're given.

Anyone know if the fightes will be able to reverse?

true space physics flying isnt fun and video games are all about fun. so keep physics out of star wars.

Yes they do. Having them closed will put your ship in cruise mode and allow it to pick up speed (space physics be damned) also, when you shunt all energy to engines, the s-foils automatically close.

I was playing XWA the other day and what actually happened was not an increase in speed, but a drastic increase in manueverability. I was dodging lasers all over the place where they were hitting me with my s-foils open. There was no increase in speed.

Just an observation from XWA

My question is how would the parachute open at all???

This is a game, real world physics don't apply!

Janson, if you close the wings you can either transfer the power from the guns, which you are not using anymore, to the engines, giving you more speed.

Also, another trick is, if you need to shake off a TIE or X-wing, or whatever it is that is chasing you, and they are right on your tail and you can't get them off you, you can pull up and decrease your speed to 2/3 or 1/3 and you'll immediatly get a sharper turnrate. This is also nice if you are in an X-wing and trying to keep yourself on the tail of those pesky TIE's (who will outturn you ).
It is a risky move, cause you are making yourself more vunerable to others attacking you for a short time, but if you do it right, they'll either fly past you, or if you are chasing someone, you can get your guns aimed infront of the TIE's.

There are plenty of ways a parachute could open up in space.

First, there is the gas that is emitted from your propulsion. That alone containes enough mass to 'billow out' a parachute. Not sure what the effect would be with engine exhaust hitting the canopy but eh, I am assuming the parachute is indestructible.

Also, there are plenty of scientific data on the idea of the 'solar sail' where it catches light particles and pushes you through space. They appear much like parachutes.

Finally, there is plenty of micro meteors that fly around in space. Hitting an indestructible chute would slow you down.

But as it is stated, this is a game.

Yeah, but you would have to have a bigass parashute for that.

Anyone else think that the parachute thing is being a little over-anaylised?

And the parachute would slow you down, it would redirect that engine thrust backward acting as a reverse thuruster . . . oh god this reminds me of highschool, must stop now
