Anyone know if the x-wings S-Foils will move and affect the ships speed?

I'm pretty sure they said you could have them open or shut.
Dunno about speed though. I'm guessing they probably will affect it.

Yes they do. Having them closed will put your ship in cruise mode and allow it to pick up speed (space physics be damned) also, when you shunt all energy to engines, the s-foils automatically close.

That'd be great if it was just like X-Wing Alliance. I loved the feeling of just... total, immersive control you had over the ships. The diverting of power to weapons and shields, the foil positions altering speed, etc.

. . . that when the S-foils are opened initially, the ship is designed to cut power from the engines, put that power into the weapons and thrusters, and also cut forward velocity by using reverse thrusters.
Why would you need a huge mechanical system to do that? Why not just redirect the power and be done with it?
I can understand S-Foils as a means to helping make the craft perform better in an atmosphere. But this "go faster in space" stuff is so silly that it never should have been made cannon.

I never said that the only way to do that was to have the S-foils open. I simply stated that when the S-foils are open, power is put toward the weapons. That is as simple an explanation as SOE could make for deciding that S-foils open means slower ship.
As an afterthought, this is being too over-analyzed. So have fun with it

Physics debates. lol
Should we get into the debate of Newtonian Flight next?

There is no wind resistance in space. Space is a vacuum. that means if you push something in a direction, it will continue in that direction at that speed until something else applies a force to it, like gravitational pull.
So, witrh that being said, ships must have a reverse, how else would you slow down?

Oh god, why are you guys over analizing this so much?
George Lucas thought it would be cool to have the wings open for attack formation. End of story.
Don't forget in the end this is all just make believe.

Because we are having fun, and a lot of us don't have anything else to do.

I have a question about physics!
If iam traveling at light speed and I turn on my headlights can I see??

how about if you have the power ratio of 50% to engines and 25% to weapons and 25% to shields? would you still travel at the same speed when the s-foils are closed,
if you didn't have weapons and you opened the s-foils you'd still fly at the same speed in space no atmosphere to create drag on the opened wings, very different matter in atmosphere but we wouldn't have to worry about that though.
