I have to destroy one on the first mission for the freelance master block. The turrets are eating my lunch, and it is growing most taxing. Any tips and thoughts are appreciated.

Mission gunboats are COMPLETELY different from non-mission gunboats. MGs have an AI, whereas NMGs don't. As long as you're within 1000m, the gunboat will aggro and engage you if you are the only target in range.
The only advice I can give for MGs would be get help, and blow off the engines first, then lead the escort away and let the boat just sit there. After you're done with the fighters, go back to the boat and shoot at it from 540m. You'll be outside the turret range yet still be able to hit.
Additionally, boosters plus Shield Front Adjust: Heavy helps in strafing runs, which is pretty much the only tactic you can apply to MGs. Boom and zoom.

If you mean, the 30 kill mission, actually you don't have to kill anygunboats, any fighter or bomber will fit the bill. If you're after rebel gunboats, you can simply stay around 560m away from it and target it's engine and start shooting, match speed with it ofthensoyou don'tget too close toit, as long as you're 545m awayyou won't get attacked. Once the engine is gone, the gunboat won't go anywhere, and you can then finish it off with impunity. Not sure if this strategy works on the Imp gunboats or not, but you can try it.
Edit
The strategy is for none mission critical gunboats.

It does work on the Ye-4s. I'm Imperial, and I took out several Corsec Ye-4s using this "strategy."
It's not foolproof, though - every so often the NMGs will come to a turn point in their paths, and if you're not paying attention, you'll wander into their turret range as they turn and you're approaching them at a perpendicular angle.
With a Ye-4, that'd hurt. Slightly less so with a Rebel gunboat.

im assuming you dont talk about the rather boring ones that just fly in a straight line and let you shoot them from a safe distance without shooting back. be fast, try to attack from the side that doesnt have two turrets on it (especially when flying away after a run). use boosters for your attack, shield shunt is your friend and lead it close to a station so you can get repairs every once in a while if it gets through your shields.

I agree that mission craft of any kind are harder to take down. You are right, this gunboat (a ye-4) chases me, and every time I try to get an angle on the belly it rolls the top to me. a few hits from each turret and game over. I will try to get a group up to tke it down. Thanks for the help folks.

Get some help,
Get it to follow someone, have them stay about 650 meters in front so that they won't get hit (Match Speed). Have everyone else take out the gunboat from behind. Take out the rear guns and engine.

I know what you're talking about. It's the last battle mission for freelance. You do need help. You have no chance of taking down those gunboats without help. Those gunboats are also extremely fast. I did a pass on one, and used IFF scramble to stop it while I flew back for repairs. By the time I got back to the space station and got repairs, it had followed me all the way. I turned back, just to find it sitting right there. It tore me up and didn't even break a sweat.
Get a group of about 4 people, and have everyone target the weapon 0. When you all attack it, your targeting computer will automatically cycle to the next weapon and your group can dissarm the thing in no time. Then just sit back and finish it
Good luck. If you're on the Gorath server and need help, send me a /tell.

Attack the gunboats from teh bottom. Need to do a little twisting and turning to manuvere your self under the belly of the beast... as Gunboats in missions will roll and twist to get their guns on you.. use boosters and spd to get underneath and use whatever piloting skills you have to stay under... quite a challenge but can be done.
Target engines or reactor, overload or E weapons your shots. Once it's disabled you can just sit underneath it and fire away while sipping tea.

i just remembered that my first gunboat was by far the easiest, mostly because i didnt know what i was doing. nicely got into position on the unarmed side, started firing and when that thing starting moving and turning i ended up inside the thing. isnt missing collision detection great? problem is it makes you feel like cheating when it cant shoot you, but then, if they would have done it right you couldnt happen to just move through it and end up on the wrong side either. how much would it take for that thing? about 3 bounding boxes to come pretty close to its actual shape?
