Thread: Help me
When you say slightly customised would that be a voided waranty? That is, if it is even under waranty, if it is I would contact Dell you may have defective hardware on your hands.
Let me also say that bad ram is still looking like a culprit, my next recomendation would be to back up and perform a clean OS install with brand new drivers... if your system has been up for 20 months it likely has a few hitchhikers.
Do you run Spybot: Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware, is your virus scan up to date? run both Spybot and Adaware, update these regularly, Anti-virus is McAfee which I also update regularly.
What if any firewall do you use have you tried setting up port forwarding for SW:G or disableing it (for testing purposes) while you play? I keep my firewall turned off while playing, I was under the assumption this improved performance. What is port forwarding and how would I set it up or disable it?
Is this an automatic falure, (the crash) has it always been or has it become more and more common as time passes?
A two yoer old machine may benifit from a new video card... but that depends on your willingness to spend money on it.
I would remove that wireless card if your PC if you are not using it but it likely isn't hurting anything.
Reinstaling XP Pro is not that bad... and you can back up your client. (I am not exactly sure how to do this with SW:G but it boils down to saving certan files reinstaling on the fresh OS and replacing thoes files you saved from the backup) offten it is the easiest but most avoided solution. If it is RAM though it will not help clearly.
You have your spyware situation handled, good for you.
Port Forwarding is basicaly telling your Firewall to ignore certan comunication ports that it would normaly block this lets you run the firewall and use network applications, as to how you set it up check the documentation on your firewall software.
what was this fix that the Dell guys gave you? that may be a big clue.

just remembered the Dell guys' fix was to re-install and update my video driver..I was having a slightly different crash problem then. Since that time I have been religious about updating my drivers.
I think I will try the OS re-install...I have been thinking about getting a new video card, possibly a 512 MB card, so I may do this anyway, I think that will make the game prettier if anything. If the OS reload does not cure the problem, then I would have to agree that a bad RAM stick is likely my problem. Hopefully the warranty is still in place to help this, though I kinda think it is expired and a new 1.0 GB of RAM probably isnt cheap.
Unless someone else has a suggestion, or you can think of anything else cityhall.
by the way thanks for the responses and the help!
May not do anything but it would rule out the video driver.

I had similar problems for quite some time until finally my machine wouldn't work at all and from the motherboard beep codes I determined that my video card was dead. Replacing it fixed everything. It was malfunctioning as soon as it got hot enough and finally burned out.
This is what I am begining to think... the video cards Dell uses are sketchy at best... and space is very taxing on older cards.
hmmm...I did have my PC fan go kaput in December, Dell was kind enough to replace it for free...could have overheated my video card then that is about the time I started getting crashes to desktop, which were replaced by system crashes...I have been wanting to upgrade my video card for awhile now
OK, new topic what is a decent (not ultra expensive) video card for this game? I am sure mine is 128 MB so I would like to go to at least 256 MB. Anyone know a good model card and an approx. price
I would find a few things in your price range and google for reviews... pay attention to who actualy made it... get one for a big maker with a good rep. (ATI cards from ATI ect.)
If you can try to spen at least $200 and get something les than 12 months old.
Also get at least 128 MB RAM and again pay attention to the chip features, full Direct X and the number of pixel piplines is very important.
