The stock answer is "the one that best fits with your play style". Do you prefer getting up close and personal with big smelly monsters, hacking them to bits or punching their fangs down their throat, or do you prefer to stay away out in the long grass, using stealth and wit to get the best shot on the bad boy, then drop it with a well placed blaster burst between the ears?
There is no one size fit's all 'best'.
Some players prefer to use ranged weapons, to 'hunt' properly. Other players prefer the cut and thrust of fencer / swords, dealing out masses of damage with every blow. Still others eschew weapons entirely and use brute strength to pummel their prey into a stunned, dizzy, blind pile of hide and bone.
Which style most suits you? Which most closely reflects your current combat choice? Which , ultimately, would YOU be happiest with?

as far as role-playing a Ranger, i think Rifleman or Carbineer would best suit a Professional Hunter more than any other combat profession.
but as many have already said, it all depends on how you want to play. if you want to be a Master Creature Handler Master Ranger, than do it. or if you want to be a Ranger with some Smuggler and some Pistoleer, go for it. or pikeman Ranger, or any other combination. this is a game, not a job, so do what makes you happy.
personally, i started the game off as a Bounty Hunter. i had visions of players putting bounties on other players, and i'd track them down and do that player's dirty work, and collect a handsome payment for it. but alas, that never came to pass. (plus, BH Carbines was a pain in the ass to grind).
I was at the temple of the Blueleaf one day while still a BH, grinding carbine xp, and i was in real bad shape, almost dead, then out of nowhere, this unarmored fella comes rushing in, and with these crazy spin kicks, and punches faster than i can imagine, he drops every one of those Dark Klikniks that were on me. I was in awe over how efficiently he dropped these critters. I knew that whatever profession this guy was, that was the one for me. he told me i needed to put the gun down, and realize that i cannot master a weapon in hand, until i master the weapons that ARE my hands. and from that day forward, i have never picked up a gun.
personally, i enjoy beating the snot out of creatures with my spiked ubese gloves (but shouldn't those gloves cause bleeding?)
