Thread: Where in the movies did it say that TIE's can't have hyperdrives or shields?
Aterak wrote:This is getting old now. i don't believe TIEs come with a hyperdrive, but they can be modified. and with shields, if it matters that much to you don't fly a TIE or fight one and if your a fanatic about continuity your playing the wrong game.
First of all, simply because continuity has taken a back seat, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to force it back into the driver's seat.
Secondly, I'm not even concerned so much with continuity as I am with game play. I want the ships to operate differently. I don't want the same ship, one with a TIE skin and one with an X-wing skin. But that's exactly what it seems some of you want--identical ships with different skins.

OMG i sware if i see another one of these posts im going to scream
In order to have any ballance at all Imp ships need shields. Otherwise things get real unballanced realy fast. Im a big continuity fan but w/o hyperdrive and shields the imps are gona cry bloody murder when JTL comes out (and as well they should)
Let me ask you this DarkArbiter, how do you know this? Have you tested a build of the game? Of course you haven't. You're simply regurgitating something somebody told you, somebody who themselves ASSUMES a game can't be fun and balanced any other way.
How about this suggestion. How about the basic TIE (without shields) is highly manueverable, and thus harder to hit. This could be balanced against the basic x-wing shields.
This would at least make the ships different. You people want the same ship for both sides, the only difference being the ship skin? Come on, let's get creative instead of close-minded and defeatist.
Ok play dev for a second and come up with a way to make the game (remeber you have to have a system that works for pvp and pve) that stays true to continuity without pissing off one side of the GCW. If you come up with a greatidea ill bite my tounge till then i stick with what ive said.
Under your current senario both sides would be bitching (i guarantee it) the rebs would be whinning that TIEs are way to manuverable and theres no way to get a hit. IMPs would be complianing that thers no way a TIE without shields can bring an x-wing down. Its sad but havning very simmilar ships with only cosmetic and minor differences that you can mod to whatever you want is the only way to make the majority happy

Obi-wan basically said in episode 4: "That's a short range fighter, it couldn't have gotten out here all by itself." Err...I know that's not the exact quote...but its the gist of it.
But he didn't say, "That's a tie fighter. No way it could have flown through hyperspace nor does it have shields."
I don't know, I guess I'm just trying to get people to realize that it's really not a big deal to be able to modify TIE's to have extra stuff.
Why would something designed to be a short range fighter....have the capability to have hyperdrives?
Just because the Empire didn't put hyperdrives onTIE's (to cut costs), does not mean one couldn't modify them.
Something not having a hyperdrive =/= something not being able to have a hyperdrive.

Size, specification, history, and capabilities of technology and machines are Techno-Fiction. This type of fiction cares little for plot, and so is almost the antithesis of Space Opera.
SWG falls somewhere in the middle.
Don't think of this game as "Star Wars", think of it as a game inspired by Star Wars. It's its own branch of Star Wars. It strives to use canon, but is not bound by canon. This is because this is a MMORP, not a space opera film or a work of techno-fiction.
Remember, all of these storie are true, and some of them actually happened.

All books and games have to be approved by GL and Lucasarts. So the books are considered actually part of the canon and so are the games (why else would they include game info in the starwars.com encyclopedia thing?)
So YES they can be modified. End of story pointless arguement.
