Thread: Why do people continue to bring up Coruscant?

yeah i agree. when you think about it at first, it sounds fun. but what would you do?! there's no wildlife, so no hunting would be available, and cities like coronet are already uninhabited.[except for the spaceports, of course] it would be a waste of time.
Actually in the lower levels there are animals that are very very dangerous to city inhabitants that get lost down there...
I think that they could make a few Orbital Shipyards where players could dock their ships and venture around. Maybe make some type of shipyard that is only accessable by player craft... HEY I THINK I WILL GO START MY OWN THREAD ABOUT THIS!!! COOL! Cheers
Argueing whether or not it can be done based upon everyones assumptions about how the engine is coded is ridiculous. None ofus knows enough about how the engine is coded to have the slightest idea about that. Trying to draw conclusions about that from the way the game plays is pure unsupported speculation, and quite silly.
Thinking you know how the engine is coded by observing what it is like to play the game is like thinking that you know what kind of nails were used to build a house by observing what it is like to sit in the house.
Anyway, the point I originally made is that the developers have recently said they very much want to do coruscant and that fact completely negates the original poster's claim that discussion of coruscant is a pointless issue because it can't be done.
Discussing Coruscant makes perfect sense. Discuss on,butpause beforethrowing the "it's impossible" argument around. There's no justification for it.

By doing Coruscant "right", within the parameters of SWG, I think people mean that Coruscant should be consistent with all of the other planets in the game. You should be able to walk from one end of Coruscant to the other. Not only would that require TONS of architecture (and most likely repeat stock buildings), but it would require a constantly loading cityscape spanning 5000 cubic meters. To divide Coruscant up into zones (the only realistic way to achieve this objective), we lose the full picture of the planet, thus resulting in a really half-done interpretation of the planet. That is why it's not really something that can be done right now, and why it wouldn't be considered doing it "right."
The Matrix Online is supposedly developing a game that will be one big zone, one big city. I don't know if this is how things will end up, but this could provide a solid basis for how to program Coruscant. We'll see what we end up with, but Bespin MUST come before Coruscant, I agree with that.
It's pretty obvious in looking at the buildings on Corellia that they had developed some art potentially for Coruscant, but ended up with Corellia being the Galactic hub. It was a good choice.
This is exactly what I meant when I said that a Coruscant restricted to the indoors would be half-assed. Coruscant split into different zones would, indeed, be half-assed as well. To maintain the atmosphere of the game, you cannot suddenly decide to switch your method of bringing a planet to life. I would be disappointed to see Coruscant brought into the game any differently from the other planets.
This is not cynical, immature, pessimistic, or unrealistic to expect. The devs have stated MANY TIMES that this is the way they feel, and the only way that Coruscant would ever see the light of day in SWG.

Erm... who here is even considering a big outdoor city version of Coruscant? Only the naysayers. No one advocating for Coruscant is suggesting that it be portrayed as a big outdoor metropolis. This whole idea that it can only be portrayed that way isthe most cynical version of astraw man argument. Let's get beyond petty rhetorical tricks and discuss the issue properly. If people are just going to base argument on their own misconceptions and biases, this discussion is going nowhere.
This warrants a reply to every sentence.

THE DEVS. THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT FOR THE PLANET!

I would love to see Coruscant in Star Wars Galaxies. I would hate to see it treated differently than the other planets in the game. An all indoor Coruscant is not acceptable, sorry.

But it IS the only way the planet can be portrayed in Star Wars Galaxies! To do it any other way would be like taking a First-Person Shooter and changing it into a Third-Person Shooter mid-game. it does NOT work, simple as that. The whole style of the game would be altered in a way that the devs do not want.

I believe you are the one here basing your argument on misconceptions and biases. It is not anyone's fault but your own that you have not paid enough attention to developer interviews and such that state CLEARLY how the devs feel about Coruscant. Yes, they want it in the game. No, they cannot do it feasibly at this point in time. Why? Because they want it in the game in the same fashion as the other planets. To do this would require power that is not available affordably or reasonably, most likely on the user's side.
I am not going to go dig up proof of this because it is common knowledge. Please go find an archive of dev interviews (they have even said it on the boards multiple times)if you want to find the proof.
It only takes a run through coronet on a populated server to agree with that.

God I wish I could dig up and quote the Dev that stated that we would not see Coruscant. I know what I read though.
Only way I can think of that the devs could add Coruscant would be to make it like 1/6th the size of a normal planet to reduce lag.
Raptor2k1 wrote:Actually, Coruscant would be easy to add in the SE...
The catch being that you can't land on anything other than the Golan Platforms orbitting the planet.
It could easily be done as a large, central space sector full of trading ships, Imperial capital ships, platforms, etc.
Sounds like a winning idea to me.
I'd add the empty space sectors and make people travel the routes on the starmap. Give people things to do on the trips... play dejarak and sabaac, Take care of business (buy/sell resources. Email, etc.
I think their more like basing them on what they see currently in the game, imo.
