I would love to be able to mine in space. I played Earth and Beyond and loved to mine and think it should be added to SWG.
My idea would be to add things to the schematics that are already in game that would get a bonus of some sort if the person making it had space minerals although not to big of an improvement as to make it the only way to survive is to have it(like kryat weapons).
I love the idea of faction space mining, that would add a lot to the PvP aspect. Although you would have to make it so the same things that are in hard to reach places(ie in other faction zones) are in places people that do not like PvP can get to. Just make it a risk vs reward system. Basically, the highest quality stuff is way in the back of a PvP zone but if you do not want to worry about PvP, you can go else where to find lower quality stuff.
This is just my two cents worth.

Never played Terminus, but the idea reminds me of space mining in Earth & Beyond, however.

This idea reminds me of the game Terminus. I don't know if anyone here has played that game. Anyway, all ships in that game had a cargo hold, some bigger than others depending on type. For this game, either a dedicated mining ship should be added or MP ships used for that purpose.
A mining ship would have a single weapon hardpoint that could only equip a mining weapon. A loot box on board could hold 75 items, so in theory this box could hold 75 100k amounts of resources. The mining weapon would be made by shipwrights and vary in effectiveness and speed based on quality. The same principal could be added to MP ships, using the current loot box. A mining weapon could be added to one or both weapon hardpoints.
To use the mining weaponyou'd have to be close to an asteroid, within 100m at least. You couldn't be moving to use it. It would also aggro any NPC ships in the area.

I love the mining idea but implementation might be difficult.
Consider how long a ground based BER13 harvester has to sit in order to extract a reasonable amount of resources. If a ship mined at a similar rate then it would mean sitting next to an asteroid for a very long time and would not be very exciting(in my opinion). The alternative would therefore seem to be to allow ships to mine at extraordinarily fast rates which in turn would undoubtedly have a massively negative impact on ground based mining and therefor the economy of the game as a whole.
Maybe a better way of implementing mining would be creating particular resources that are not avaialble on the ground. The small quantities minedshould still have sufficient allure for the ground-based crafters to want to buy them in order to enhance their assemblies. For example, a particular kind of space-copper that could be optionally added to a weapon assembly that decreased the speed.
On a different note, I would love to see space-physics implemented. eg. you fire off at max speed towards the targetted corvette and as you approach from slightly to the left andrear, you shut off engines and turn and fire as the momentum carries you along your original trajectory, effectively peppering the side of the enemy ship with fire while flying sideways. Attack run done, you turn into your trajectory heading, fire booster/engines and loop around for another side-swiping attack. Lovely
Just my 2 cents

I'd love to see space physics in a space sim as well, but the thing is, space physics don't seem to have ever existed in the Star Wars universe.

This will never happen and I can tell you why. JTL costs money people have to go out and buy jtl ontop of galaxies result. People who wanted to play lightspeed will now have an unfair advantage. Which is okay frankly stupid as hell with a game thats as depleted as it is. All this could do is alienate another huge player base, and bring the death of this game ever closer.
Dev promise number one. They stated numerous times that space based items and skills will not I repeat will not be transferable to the ground either in the form of non space based items, or resources. Second space based missions will not have any decided edge over ground based missions.
The only way this scenario could be fairly applied would be to make it a you choose situation. You mine asteroids. Fine but you can no longer mine the ground. In general I think the whole mineing thing in the game is gone to excesses. I know players that literally have five hundred million resources and are complaining because they cannot stockpile anymore.
I applaud the effort to come up with something else to do in space, but this is really self serveing and discriminatory. You chose to play the side game. You cannot force other players to do the same. Space should be a bonus bag about space fithing and exploreing. Not a special rewards program to beat ground dwellers over the head with.

I love this idea! Right now artisans are starting to go down hill because they can't find the reasorses. If they can go into space and get reasorses fasterthat will create new things for all sorts of people to do plus help drive reasors prices down. Plus we can have some metals and stuff that can only be found in space to make super items but of course make them rare just like the nice reasorses they shift.

I see what you mean about giving the JTL people more of an advantage. However I think holding them back just because the ground doesn't have it in my mind is unfair. Just do not make the space reasorses that much diffrent that those on the ground. Yes some will have to be very usful to encourage people to do it.They will have to invest in large ships and take the time to gather it. And remember instead your minirals beinggathered in a hopper while sitting in a cantina drinking a nice cold jawa beer, in a ship you have to sit and wait for the ship to do it. Yes you are going to get campers but they are everywere.

I also know a few people that have almost that amount of resources. And if they are having trouble storing it then they should sell it. If they are having trouble selling it then the prices are to high. Isee peoplewho wereselling iron or whateverfor 7-10 CPU that was just normal and couldn't. Most of the time thats because they are trying to over price. Also artisans know this more than anyone. I was going SW and spent my 4 million in no time just trying to grind. (just made 4,0,0,1 with it to!

I understand were you are comming from but there still will be a place for the miniral gathers on the ground.
