It's actually very easy to level in JtL. Those master pilots and aces out there are most certainly not exploiters and most of them are also people with lives.
I mastered pilot in 6 days playing on the weekend and weeknights from after dinner to bed time. I grouped with people only after I failed a mission solo 4 times (it's fun to do things yourself first) and even found the time to help others with their missions quite a few times.
The 7.5 million xp for ace is just for show. If you manage to complete the corvette mission you get that box for free. Tier 3 and the first Tier 1 box are also freebies.
Not being in a guild is also not an excuse for not completing the master mission. I went to Kessel alone (this was when PvP was enabled too) and by the end of the night had a large rag-tag group of ships put together (some imp + some neutral... yes, we had to watch for friendly fire) with the goal of destroying the corvette.
Had I powerlevelled with a group the whole time, I'm sure I could have pulled masted in 3 days or so. It's really not that hard to hit master fast, but what's the rush anyways? By Tier 4 (4333) I had everything that I needed - I'm still using that same ship and equipment as my primary ship.
I don't think JtL was designed with a long grind in mind. IMHO, it was designed to feed you some content, get you access to new ships and toys, then to let you loose on the galaxy to explore, wreak havok, blast each other to bits, or do whatever it is that floatsyour boat.

seriously dude....
I have fulltime job. I have a life. I didn't play as much as normally play and I still Mastered Privateer this past Saturday. Just spend a little time doing research on where to go for good exp (Lok, Endor did some research for ya) and just fly. It's not like you need to seek out buffs or anything for an hour before going up. Grouping up really helps speed things up as well, especially at Tier 3 and above. You should have used your time better....I mean come on....you coulda grabbed a Tier 1 box in the time that it took to start this stupid thread.

5 day a week job, wife, 3-year-old boy, bills, maintenance, 30 minute commute, SWG, JTL....I'm swamped.
Yet I mastered in 2 1/2 weeks. I'm no powergamer....

Hehe! I'm thoroughly enjoying going up the tiers (and taking my time). JTL ended up being a great diversion from my droid business. When I have things squared away at the shop, I go blast baddies in the backwaters of space. I'm currently 3-3-3-3.
I really want the MP ships, but anticipation is a spice of life.
