lol wondering all over the place here, there has been MMORPGs that have tried the general PvP approach, I think Shadowbane and Lineage 2 both do ... haven't played them so don't know for sure what the servers are like.

Ive played Lineage 2. It has unconsensual PvP. but I'll tell you why it works there andwould not in swg. Its because EVERY class in Lineage 2 is a fighter class. The only class that can craft are dwarfs and guess what.. they dont get any XP for crafting, only fighting. So even if they want to level up in crafting, they need to pick up a weapon and fight. That means that everyone is capable if defending themselves if someone tries to attack them.

This system will never work in SWG. There are way too many professions that do not have combat skills. If unconsensual PvP was implemented in swg, it would drive allot of people away. Just think of a crafter who has payed 10 million credits for this clothing attachment to get more experimentation points... but some jerk decides to grief this person by continuously killing him/her thereby eventually destroying the clothing and attachment. So what if they put a bounty on the guy, who cares it wont fix the problem. The BH slaps him on the wrist and he goes back to griefing.. rinse, repeat.

One of the things I like about SWG is that is is very balancedin my opinionwhen it comes to appealing to very different playstyles. This is what makes swg very interesting.. to have people who are killers to very social people being able to live together.

You've got some good points Orgotholik. Some very good ones. A completely free PVP system doesn't work. Someone pointed out to me earlier that UO went from 100,000 to 15,000 subscribers because it was all open PVP in the begining. Then they added a "safe" world where PVP was only faction (order/chaos) and guild based. But they kept the open PVP world there two. On the same server. Moon gates anyone? Now UO is still competing even though it'd 2d and like 8 years old.

SWG has tried to do the same kind of things with overt/covert. Problem is no one but the die hards see any real point to being overt. And most coverts don't do anything remotely related to the GCW.

I personally am all for some added danger. If I get into an argument with somebody in a cantina I want to pull a blaster and shoot them without having to ask permission first. SWG has practically NO death penalty other than you have to visit a med center and/or cantina for a few minute afterwards. If they got rid of cloning wounds I'd be all for some kind of open PVP system. All it does is inconvenience me for like a minute.

Why do I like the idea? It promotes social order. The Empire rules the galaxy. They protect the innocent (yeah not really but in SWG they do unless you have really low Imperial faction). You get into a brawl in a cantina, shoot someone up cause they mouthed off. Some Stormtroopers come in. If your unlucky enough to still be there when they show up, you probably got a fight on your hands. They catch you walking in the streets? You got a fight on your hands. Every time you kill someone else (unless it's an agreed duel or your an overt Imperial) should generate more "bounty visabilty."

Get too much, (i.e. the griefers who kill people for fun randomly) then you have a bounty on your head and probably can't step near an imperial town (which should include EVERY town that has a starport)

When you get brought to justice (have to come up with something here) then your name is cleared. Get a bounty on yourself too many times and you are semi-perminately on the bounty list. There has to be a way to get off obviously, and it can't be too pleasent.

This would encourage players to police themselves and those around them. Those daring enough to stand up to the Imperial law and risk a lot will no matterthe concequences. Most of them will probably become rebels. As they should. Overt rebels shouldn't exist in this time. All are covert. those who are in trouble with the Empire are and probably should be rebels. it makes sense in a GCW sense.

Need to switch planets but think it's too risky because your on the Empire's "bad" list? Need to get weapons/stims/etc. but can't do so on city bazaars or in policed player cities? that's where smugglers come in.

there should be no rebel cities. all the player cities should either be imperial or neutral. and the Empire should put a garrison in every neutral and Imperial player city to maintain order on the frontier.

Want a rebel hangout? Unregistered groups of houses in the wilderness. You really think the rebellion in the movies had their meetings and such at the Coronet starport or in a Rebel owned city on Naboo? ummmm no

sorry i've been going on for way too long... my mind is just pouring out ideas here...

i'll stop

Hmmmm, where to begin, oh yeah I got it, RESPECT. I think thats a good place to start since it seems to be the underlying theme to a lot of what was talked about in the many post here, and a lot of what was missing, oh you didn't pick that up well lets see if I can sum it up for you all, don't wanna upset anyone with a long post (did anyone tell you guys to read it in the first place, if it's too long go to another post and leave your pointless comments to yourself, once again where is the respect). My understanding of what Orgotholik is asking for is pure and simple more freedom and granted since this is in a game, with more freedom needs to come checks and balances that ensure proper use of the freedom. In reference to PVP, yes there needs to be a system that only allows someone to attack an equal or higher leveled individual, hence you get no new players being attacked.

Orgotholik's discussion of the ability to steal speeders, rob buildings... things of that nature, I'm pretty sure he wasn't saying these are his wishes and plans if a system was established that would allow such actions. Instead he is acknowledging the fact that these are actual events in any kind of society, there are always those that live on the opposite end of the law and yes this is usually but a small percentage of society. Therefore, implementing such a design shouldnot lead to mass stealing or any such actions, because once again as players you have the option to choose whether you perform these tasks. This leads into the other argument about various guards and protectors of the public, there really should be some sort of protecting service or law making service, and don't say the freakin empire and imps. Similar to what Orgotholik speaks of perhaps there should be some sort of bounty that is placed upon the person that performs a malicious action, then perhaps that person should be posted in the mission terminal, non BH,as a different form of mission. I truly think these are the things that Orgotholik was trying to hint towards, and not just mad chaos.

Also, I have to point out, there was lots of replies concerning how bad it would be to just kill and steal bikes and all the other bad things, how this was just a terrible idea and just evil, etc...Then some of the same people write how the post was a long rant, needed paragraphs, wrote that Orgotholik was whining, etc... Explain to me the honor in hypocrisy, you fight for respect in the game yet show none in real life

Yeah this a long post but oh well deal with it. I don't understand how someone can voluntarily browse these forums and then complain someone wrote too long of a post. Anway, in closing (for that english professor wanting organized paragraphs) you can take this with a grain of salt or you can take it to heart either way here it is. You don't have to always agree with others but you should always respect others, thus if you don't like what someone writes in a post, so be it state your comments, or don't keep them to yourself, but keep in mind respect for the other person. It's almost too funny how tough we all are when we're hidden via the internet, try remaining true to who you are in RL even when browsing the boards, in other words keep all the name calling to yourself and the other junk too unless you're as mean as Ray Lewis, big as the Hulk, and as ugly as you the reader of this (lol, just a joke I've got a little sense of humor).

To me PvP should be an option for people who want it. I know I would quit if PvP became unconsentual. Why? Because people would be camping shuttleports to just kill people. Basically it would be a like a game for 3 year olds when they have a tempertantrum.

I got past the first paragraph but then decided the second was clearly too long to be a real paragraph and I didn't read it.

The enter key is cool invention. It breaks up things...makes em easier to read.

Not everything is supposed to be balanced, because if everythings balanced, whats the point?

This has to be the dumbest statement ever made in the history of humanity.
