Thread: Capital Ships

p.s. there is no room for freelance neutral pilots in space, they should be able to go overt reb/imp in deep space!!! hurry and fix that!!!
Hoko, can you explain what you mean by "no room for freelance neutral pilots in space"?
Being a neutral pilot, I personally wouldn't want to have to declare Reb or Imp. But that's nothing to do with not wanting to do PvP, it's to do with wanting to be neutral. I want to be able to declare as a neutral and go into deep space and fight any faction I want. I want to be able to do pirate raids on equipment transports or join the highest paying faction as a mercenary. As the man once said "I ain't in this for your revolution... I'm in it for the money"
As far as Capital ships go, I'm all in favour of having capital ships. It was great discovering the Nebulon B Frigate in Endor and I'd like to see more craft as well. SDs would be fantastic to fly around and could be used as imp space stations from which missions could be carried out and repairs undertaken. They don't need to be attackable (although having the odd one spawn in different sectors that was attackable would be great too)
I agree that player-run capital ships are a little unfeasible but also agree that more ships are needed, for both players and NPCs.
Gunboats would be sweet though. An easier change would be to change the current MP ships, I'd be very happy with that. The MP ships have little use in space combat. They are good for the novelty factor. 4 turrets and 2 shields and then we're ready to rock.
The Devs are doing to JTLS exactly what they did to the ground game after launch. They start bouncing around from project to project doing a little bit here and there but all in all rarely do big, read fun and beneficial, changes get made.

Capital ships are just too big for the server populations we have. It would be sweet to have 100 imps or rebels ready to go up in one but that happens rarely if ever.

Capital ships are not too big for this game, but the major ones, like Calamari cruisers, ISD's, and the death star need to be treated as cities. (For now anyway) Players should be able to dock at them for repairs, and walk around the interiors. Something anyway...
The smaller ones like the medical frigates, the corvette's and all the gunboats need to be able to be player controlled.
I'd like to see there be a gunners station on ALL MP ships that control groups of guns (or all of them) so that 1 person could pilot a ship to battle, set it on autopilot and go man the gunners chair, and control all the guns by firing from that chair. IE where he puts the target reticle, any guns able would fire at that point. On larger ships there could be several gunners stations, Port, starboard, stern, etc. This worked very well for Warbirds, a single person piloting a B17 flying fortress could man one gun station and he essentially controlled all the guns. He could jump between stations for better visibility, or look around from the outside to find enemies.
You could still have 1 player on each gun, but when you don't have that many players you are still using all the guns.

All I want is a single room with a starship terminal in it. No frills, just someplace to reload missiles, reconfigure a ship, or buff people for MP ship duty.

I disagree. They could make this happen. Its very simple. If they can't program the whole inside of a ISD they make parts of the ship have doors blocking the rest of the ship that say on it. Authorized pearsonel only. As in not you and me. You could ague that it was still a large job to do. Yes I have to agree but so is a POI like the corvett. And that is what this could be. I wouldn't care if the part they let us walk around in on the ISD smaller than what the vett is. Just get down to the parts that matter such as the parts outside the docking area. Like maybe a cantina inside the ISD for traveling imeprials to hang out. Also several other things people could go see inside the ship. And also of course quests that people could go on.
I could see them having large capital ships such as the star destroyers, mon cal cruisers, etc... being static where people could if you are of the appropriate faction you could request landing in their launch bay only so that you can get repairs, missions, and reloading ammo. But you should not be able to run around the corriders, etc... I just do not see the point in that. Where is the content in exploring the rooms of a destroyer? Maybe if they had NPCs inside it which gave missions, like a theme park in space. But other than that, I do not see the point.

I agree large capital ships shouldnt be player controlled. But larger ships such as gunships, frigates(repair), and corvettes maybe feasible and enjoyable.
I agree on this 100% although I think there are issues with the current MPS that need to be resolved first and foremost.

A separate topic but this sounds pretty cool.

The point would be the coolness factor to it but to have any long term purpose there would need to be content associated with it. Having a Capital Ship as the source of Master Pilot Duty Missions would be very cool.
