Droids in Space: A Quick Overview
Space droids are what I craft. I've got a little vendor in my guild "mall" dedicated to these droids. But, enough about me, on to the Overview.
In space, pilots gain the ability to use flight computers/astromechs in their ships. The higher they get in the skill boxes, the better the droid they can use. But, only certain ships can use astro droids. All the other ships use flight computers.
v1-v6 Flight computers are built ready to be used by the pilot. That is, of course, the pilots program them.
Astromechs on the other hand are a somewhat different approach to build them. Equiping a droid (R-series) with a Data module give it the ability to be used as an astromech. Data module 1 gives it a Level 1 Astromech Certification. Data module 2 give it Level 2 Astromech Certification and so on and so forth. If pilots have the said skill, they can use it.
So, if you haven't gotten the picture yet, here it is straight. You can enable the droid to be a astro droid by putting in the corrosponding data module. Not the corresponding Flight computer. Those serve to same purpose, but are different.
I hope I explained it well enough. Or have I confused you more? I think it is explained in the the Droid 101 Guide.
