Thread: A-Wings... kinda suck.

The A-Wing is faster than most of the other ships, but speed is not the only measure of its flight performance. I find its maneuverability, and the capacity it has to use roll to maintain a target lock, to be head and shoulders above the X-Wing. I would also suggest that if you have a full stack of L4 gear in there, you might want to look into alternate configurations. I currently have a L8 blaster and a L5 (playermade) shield crammed into mine, along wit a high-output (low 90's) engine. I am packed JUST too tight for armor, but the shield makes up for it, and the blaster still needs to be RE'ed, so I have room to negotiate on that.

The trick is knowing what NOT to put in the A-Wing. For example, I have a L2 reactor in there. Why? Because there's not much it can hold, so there's little point in weighing it down any more than I need to. Does this mean my reactor has little armor? Yes, it does. However, it also means a bigger shielding unit (and eventually ship armor), so that makes up for it. Plus, if the thing blows out. . . screw it. It's a L2 reactor. I also looked for a low-mass version of my Booster and Droid Interface, and obviously, I don't carry missiles onboard. But for those sacrifices, I was able to get a 2000-3000 vs.62 blaster on the ship, and a capacitor with a recharge of 35. Honestly, the capacitor was the hardest to work out, and that absolutely HAD to be a RE'ed part.

But the A-Wing is actually quite awesome, now that I have it set up. I am scoring kills more slowly than in my Y-Wing while hunting, simply because I lack the firepower of my larger, slower ship. But one thing I am really digging it for is helping people with missions, because I can easily switch targets, play more than one role (interceptor and disabler for example), and make swift strikes on mission objectives despite enemy numbers.

I was doing the tier 4 mission right before the master mission to kill the 30 ties in kessel using my a-wing. I had it decked out with the best low mass stuff I could find, except for the weapon. I used that 36k mass 3600dmg reward gun. It took me about 2 hours to get to 29/30. During that time I took a little bit of damage, but was handling them pretty well. I died on the last ship due to a bug. Anyhow I had to do the whole thing over (I was a little upset to say the least). And the second time around I used my x-wing and man I tell you I noticed a big difference. I used 2 advanced canons on the xwing and was able to kill a lot faster. I completed the mission in about 45 minutes (as opposed to 2 hours). I dont think Ill be using the a-wing anymore. The equipment you can use on the xwing is just far superior; it has much more fire power (I used 2 2600 dmg adv cannons). I'll take the drop in speed and turning, which I have not found to besubstantially worse. Neither one could keep up with those tier 5 ties. With the x-wing I would slow down and let the ties aproach and blast them head on and that killed them quick (BTW this is a good strat for those agressors. You don't want to chase them they will shoot you in the face as you follow them.) So my assessment is that xwing is far superior, at least for PvE, just because of the better fire power and equipment. I havent tried both for PvP and can't make any comment about that.

I still love my A-Wing and its been what a week and a half, maybe two. I will not fly anything elese, unless my guild need me in a brick bomber (but I don't see that happening, they really like my help in the A). As stated above, it is the fighter pilot's fighter, if you like the massive firepower weapons platforms, good they have an important roll in any squadron, but alas Ranger/Recon = A-wing "First in Last out".

It seems to me that the A-wings biggest advantage is not getting hit as your always behind your targets and nothing can get around behind you and if they do for a sec your so small your hard to hit.

Yep. Tiny tiny little pixie (or should i say pixle) of a ship.

As far as i have seen every expierenced pilot i have met sticks with A-Wing or lets say hyper-maneuverable ships...

Same, every person that has the cert, at least that i have seen, uses an a wing. they say they are great, and plus, from what ive seen, they are insanely maneuverable and fast.

The A-wing lasts much longer in a fight because it gets hit much less (I do think it needs to be faster to be upto the standard it was in other X-wing games though), also the A-wing is very good at getting in close to take out turrets etc.The X-wing is kinda stupid because lasers that pass between the wings still count as a hit. Probably a side effect of them making the hitboxs much bigger than the ship, but it gives the X-wing one of the biggest hit areas of all fighters.

The A-wings only weaknessis slow speeds and firepower, if the target is moving slow you have to overshoot and make another pass, at slow speeds the A-wing has THE slowest turn rate. Basicly its fast or nothing.

Also whoever said you need to grind 7.5 million exp is wrong, you only need to do the missions for master
