The A-Wing is my ship of choice, hands down. Not only is it fast and extremely maneuverable, it is very small compared to the other fighters. That translates into less hittable surface area compared to an X-Wing or a B-Wing. Combine all that with a good pilot and you are stronger than any shielding. It's true you can't take too many hits, but you will likely get hit far less than anyone else so it balances out. It just remains to be seen how much of JTL will be twitch. If shots track based on a hit / miss roll, then we will have problems.

The A-Wings max speed is 5100 as oppossed to the TIE Advanced at 4150
Don't know where you got those numbers from, but that's not at all what was in "TIE Fighter" and "XvT". In those games:
TIE Bomber: 80
B-Wing: 90
TIE Fighter/X-Wing: 100
TIE/Adv x1 (which is in JTL): 105
TIE/In: 111
A-Wing: 120
Missile Boat: 120 (IIRC; can double speed by sucking energy from lasers)
TIE/Adv (not yet seen in JTL): 140 (IIRC)
TIE/Def (not yet seen in JTL): 150 (IIRC)
These are the base speeds (shields/lasers/engines/[beam] equally balanced). In practice, you'll likely have energy redirected somewhat to the lasers for recharging, which will suck energy from your engines and slow you down. Also, if I have a beam weapon (tractor beam, jammer, etc.), I would often use the extra energy available to pour more into the engines and forget about the beam, which increases speed.
As you can see from the above, TIE/Def is fastest, unless the Missile Boat uses its speed doubler. With all power to the engines, I beileve the TIE/Def goes over 400. Note that the TIE/Def has not been mentioned by the devs, and is unlikely to appear in JTL, at least for a while. It doesn't enter service until after Hoth, and even then it's not in large numbers.
I don't know what units these are in, but we can assume they are all internally consistant, so the above is useful for comparison, with other Star Wars craft, even if we can't compare it to a real-life craft.
I think we can assume the A-Wing will have the fastest base speed in JTL, unless one of the nutral craft or funky new Imp craft have different stats. Of course, YMMV, as upgrading will probably play a large role in JTL.

HOW MANY TIMES DO PEEPS NEED TO READ!? THE DEVS SAID THAT SHIPWRGHTS CRAFT ALL PLAYER SPACE CRAFT SAVE FOR THE STARTER SHIP!! YOU ONLY NEED TO BUY IT FROM THE GUY WHO MADE IT!
Erm...Some of the high end faction ships will require faction points to buy..Speculation is that you will use your FP to buy a schematic..Then take it to your Shipwright to get it made

NOOOOOOOOOO
That's rather cruel. I would have thought that the B-wing would have been pinnacle - not my beloved A-wing!
Well, any ideas on how many faction points that means? I really hope it's not in the 10,000 range - that would be crazy for anyone who is casual in their play style and doesn't like grinding Fp.

I'm not sure that it will be the top craft but i think it will be in the same skill box as the tie intercepter. Since they kinda are along the same lines with there speed.
