When I had my 56k connection I was an Artisan/Architect supporting a guild out on Lok. Never went to major cities much or got involved with large scale combat but had a good laugh chatting with a bunch of people I knew from another game and supplying them with structures, furniture, tools etc...

Was a pain in the ass but more fun than many of my other online options.

Why would anyone even attempt to play this game on dial-up? I get lag sometimes with dsl! I didnt even think this game would work with 56k. crazy.

===============================================================================

Not that crazy. Suprisingly it works quite well in PvE. I would not engage in PvP much but PvE the occasional stutter is not that bad. I was on vacation...

Royal Caribean Cruse Line....

Middle of Carribean...

Dial-up connection in my cabin...

Played just fine. Use it to get my harvesters moved and updated, did some PvE without problems, even engaged in small PvP but realized this was the least feasible.

As far as downloading, serf the web, log in but play some normal game (Civilization III Woo Hoo) or even some other online game and over the next week, it will download. I believe if you are playing SWG the Bits technology does not download so if that is all you play you may have trouble downloadiing it quick enough.

Occasionally, an on-line game will offer large updates via CD but that is rare.

Buying the JTL CD will not eliminate the need for the 150 MB patch that is occuring right now.

Dialup here costs 20 dollars a month

DSL costs 60 dollars a month

So yes I could get DSL but then I'd have no money to play SWG.

I'm certain others are in similar situations, or perhaps even live in areas that don't offer cable/dsl hookups.....

where do you people live that doesn't have dsl or cable? $60 a month sounds high to me but I really dont how this game is even enjoyable without dsl or cable. Even with my dsl and 1.5GB of ram I still get lag sometimes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that JTL is only available to high-speed Internet users.

My source: the JTL Beta that can only be accessed through a high-speed connection

=======================================================================

Beta programs frequently require this due to huge daily and sometime hourly updates. Once the game is released and in the field, then the need for broadband is not critical. SWG is very playable on a dial up.

Just so all of you know, most satelite companies offer a broadband service. If you cannot get DSL or Cable maybe you should check your local sat company.

Get with the times and get broadband instead of complaining. It isn't expensive, and if you play a MMPORPG it just doesn't make any sense to do it with a 56k.

Because as we all KNOW every single person in the states HAS high speed access AND $50/month to pay for it.

For your information, you REPUBLICAN @SS WIPE, according to this report (http://ftp.fcc.gov/jointconference/services_study-oct2002.pdf) the coverage rate for broadband OUTSIDE a metropolian areas is 48% within the United States.

Why the hell is he a republican @@swipe? not trying to flame, just curious. Granted, I do in live in a metropolitan area, but my dsl costs me 29 bucks a month. Thats only 15 more than that netzero highspeed crap. And I ask again, where do you people live that has no dsl or cable?

Oh and by the way, did you happen to look at the date on that report? November 2002. Two years ago. Things have changed a little bit since then. I highly doubt that coverage is still only 48%

And these are the same people who are going to be complaining about HDTV that its not affordable when everything changes over to HDTV in the next 1 or so. I understand those who dont have High Speed broadband, but then my question is why play a MAJOR game like SWG when you have dial up. You know the patches are going to be huge so why complain. As Super Chicken use to say, You know the Job was dangerous when you took it fred!

I know how painful dial-up can be. Luckily I updated though and I downloaded this patch in 4 minutes lol.

I was surprised to find out that many games do play fairly well on dial-up. I tried it for a few weeks after a move before my cable was being installed. There are obvious downsides, but to me these are the same things people deal with when they have an outdated computer. A 2-3 year old video card usually can't handle crowded areas in this game. If someone can't upgrade they just deal with that and change their game style accordingly.

But these are probably the top reasons for using dialup

1) can't afford it

2) Can't get anything but dialup(Satellite is even more expensive than cable or dsl, a lot more)
