Well.. it seems to me that if the ships are hard to use in the first place then teamwork will play an important role and voice chat will keep your hands free to run the "hard to use ships" while coordinating your squad.

Planetside had the option for quick link team commands such as "Need a Medic"... as much as those are annoying those would be a much simpler option in the time being than integrated voice. I'm still getting used to listening to people using teamspeak... I wonder why my group keeps dying and I now know that the guy with the "chipmunk" voice is getting me killed... maybe "Need a Medic" really isn't that annoying of an option over people's real voices... answered my own question I did

Perhaps, but can you type "113" without using your fingers? The beauty of voice chat lies in its speed, versatility and hands free operation. These 3 factors will outwiegh using a keyboard in a twitch combat situation. Speaking will have a minimal effect on what your doing with your hands to control your ship, but key commands would have a greater effect and become a hinderance, not to mention its limited to preset phrases.

I don't want to totally rag on anyone though, and key commandslinked topreset phrases would be better than nothing.

I already shout enough as is at my computer while playing... I don't want to subject my squad to the vulgarity that ensues at my house during combat... that's why I stick to presets... I can't go too far with those

Well I don't think they really have to make it part of the system, I just think they could say, we want people to try and use x so that most people are using the same chat system.

Yeah, a voice chat for groupies would be wicked..I used to play Day of Defeat, and they had one..that was really cool..

My first choice would be for an integrated system, but my second choice would be for "the best" voice chat app to be chosen by SOE and included with JTLS. (but I would still want an integrated voice chat implemented soon after release if the latter is done)

I currently use Teamspeak with my PA and I can tell you now it is invaluable in PvP. I suggest using that for now. There is no reason to bog dev time with trivial things like voice chat when there are plenty of 3rd party programs that can run in the background and take up very little cpu time.

Voice Comm is a must for this game, it just wouldnt work without it, fast paced , no time for typing.

However, i dont think 3rd party programs are then answer, jsut for convience purposes, i dont wanna be flyin around askin fr server IPs so i can join their chat channel. If you are in a guild wot happens when no one else is online?? Play by urself ? that doesnt sound like a lot of fun to me.

However, an in-game chat channel will be much better, with choice for muting (people u dont like), a guild chat area, a rebel/imp chat etc.

There are much more possibilities and as someone else mentioned in this thread use of a specifc chat server to reduce the lag.

We pay our money each month i think we deserve a service like this.

Thank you Tony.

Justa little blurb here about lag for the people who are worried about it. There are plenty of ways for this to be a reality without causing a significant amount of lag. Many of the posts made above go into detail about what can be done to avoid it. Please read through the thread before posting things saying lag will cause more problems then the voice chat is worth. There are other threads out there concerning voice chat as well that pretty much squash the lag issue.

My guild are planning on using Voice-com, whether it's included with th game or not. It would be much more beneficial for it to be an SOE based VC, as it is easier to integrate to the system. However, it would be nice for the VC system to be integrated with a short-key vocalised command system (for groups) so you can EITHER speak to your group OR press F1 to send a pre-programmed "Rally on Group Leader!" command, or F2 for "Attack my Target!".

I sincerely hope that SOE have realised that this kind of communication is crucial to the success of PvP in this type of game. Even in Eve-Online we used TeamSpeak to communicate during battles as provided a much faster method for relaying messages between combatants. It also adds a "realism" of space that you can actually communicate directly with your team/guild mates over a vocal system. The bonus of having it in an SOE system could also be that they add the magnetic interference effect that you hear in the movies to your transmissions. Now that would be great heh!

5 stars!
