They can be either manually gunned or locked forward.
Let's put this debate at rest and tell the Dev's to change it so that BOTH sides can benefit from this.
If you want to have your friends man the guns then by all means let them be manned, and if you're solo you can fire them forward. My god people whatever happened to coming to a solution that would be fair to both sides?
Please believe me. Especially after flying in Kessel, being able to lock those suckers forward will not be a benefit. You need to be able to turret your shots if you're going to get anywhere in that brick.
It simply does not have the maneuverability. You will quickly hate the ship.

I dont remember hearing this said anywhere, but at least it explains why Lando could fire the guns(though how hard would it have been to get any various reb soldiers to man the guns on the falcon which we just didnt see since they werent main characters and in the cockpit? Thats just a possible senerio though) But agreeing w/ the guy above, how beneficial will this be even if they do make it where u could fly it solo?

If they can be locked forward in other games which are Lucas approved then I see no reason why they shouldnt be in this game.
I hate the YT-1300 anyway, I've never even remotely liked it, it's oddly disfigured and just doesnt look good to me. So you could imagine my joy when you can finally use a different ship in XwA.
Anyway, the Devs have thrown continuity out the door so they might as well make it fun and enjoyable for everyone.
"That assumes there was no one manning the turrets. The cockpit was fully staffed (2 rebels behind Lando & Nien Nunb), so why wouldn't the turrets be?"

I believe he fired the forward mounted missiles. But, I don't believe it really matters anyways. The multi-player ships are all blanced and meant to be operated by a group. LEAVE IT BALANCED.
My god I hope the dev's don't cave on this one... As it is the entire ground game has gone almost completely solo. With buff and armor the way they are almost nobody groups unless they are doing the Corvette or DWB. This is a MMORPG. If you don't like grouping go play a solo game or be happy with your fighter.

If you are a movie buff...
1. Ep4 is not really clear on positions of Han and Chewie
2. Ep6 we see the falcon firing weapons out between the front pylons of the ship.
What we can deduce is that the ship is capable of being modified. Whether it be Lando or and PC in Galaxies.
The Manuverablity of the ship makes it a crappy dogfighter and therefore is not a good ship to be capable of soloing in. However if the front of the ship is facing a target and has a shot at it the pilot should have that ability to hit it. Especially if there are cap ships around. At the very least this ship should have a missle hard point.
As for the comments on how it would be impossible to fight with them locked forward anyways so why bother? It wouldn't be impossible, just a bit more difficult. But it would leave you with a defensive alternative to just sitting there and letting them pound the crap out of you.
Someone else mentioned the 3 Missile tubes. Well, I haven't used the missiles in this game yet, but it makes sense to me that you need your target in front of you in order to get a missile lock and fire... sounds like the same situation as having the turrets locked forward or placing forward mounted guns.
