Wow, I don't think I've ever managed to make a suggestion that wasn't disliked by somebody.
Thanks, folks. It seems as though this is something people really would like to see, so one hopes the devs either have something like this cooking already or see the merits of the idea.

Jimer's my hero.
I think I'm gonna make you my Aid de Camp in the Luftwaffle. When the Alvis forums come back, I'll get the archbishop to change your rank.

Excellent, excellent ideas. Five stars for you. I especially like the group commands like attack or defend a certain target. You played XvT or XWA it looks like. Yes? These things aresorely missing from JTL. You could probably add a few more commands, like formations, target my component, retreat, etc.
I think a template of squadron logos could be interesting, You come up with about 10 or 20 basic shapes of logos for each faction. Add some wingding-type flourishes that can make each one look a little different, then allow for coloring. The logos will look similar, butnot the same.
Also, it would be good to allow a squadron leader to hold drills, so that his pilots could practice PvP. You could take half your squadron in Group A and the other half in Group B and then make them attackable to each other. You could allow for time limits and set specific goals like "disable only" or "first player to punch through shields." Just some thoughts.

Nice enhancements! I was disappointed the first night that I grouped with some guildmates and I hit the /setFormation F-key, and I got the "No Such Command" message. Formations would be great...or if not formations, I would LOVE a /matchHeading command so that you could more easily fly parrallel to your wingmen or escort target.

Or you could have Squadrons able to do PvP duels with "phantom" damage that is registered during the battle, and affects your ship as normal damage does, but is actually "simulated", so that when the training battle is over, your ship is automatically restored to its previous condition with no decay. I like that idea.
The logos- another great idea that keeps it from just being a standard menu of icons. It would be outstanding if we could submit a graphic for the devs to texturize (after it's approved, of course) and place in the game as artwork for a squadron. Maybe that could be a monthly reward for the Squadron on the top of the Prestige list. ![]()

Actually, I never played XvT or XWA, although I played a lot of the console games- Shadows of the Empire and such. I've always been a fan of space-based sims, though. My favorites have always been the Wing Commander: Privateer games, and of course the regular Wing Commander games. This just seems like a logical extension of the JtL.
I'm actually thinking that the devs have something like this cooking. Or I hope they do.
