i've tried both mouse and joystick(microsoft sidewinder) and found that for me the mouse was more responsive. i wasn't able to track my targets as well with the joystick as i was with the mouse. it all depends on your play style and which one is more responsive for you.

I tried this controller and wasn't impressed (for this game at least). I'm 10x better with the mouse. Not sure if that means I'm unusually good with the mouse or that I just suck with the joystick

I use the mouse, but that's mainly because my joystick is a cheap, sucky hunk of plastic.
Maybe I will eventually get one worthy of the game, but until then, it's all about the Logictec optical mouse.

Saitek Cyborg EVO is what I use now, I also like the good ol low-tech Sidewinder.

Mouse. I can't get the fine 'free floating' control with a joystick. for turreting, I increase the sensitivity about 80%.
have tried 3-4 joysticks, all had similar sensitivity issues for me.

Sidewinder pro joystick. It increased my flight performance by 95%. It handles great. Bagged a whole squadron of TIE's, and their commander.
