I think they did a good job on truly making one look at trade offs for ships. I know sooner or later folks will get up to the uber stuff, but early on low mass is often much more important than other factors.
I agree with you, Mkappus. There simply were no Uber ships in beta. no matter how far up the skill tree you get, and how advanced your ship model/chassis is, you do have to make a decision. I spent 50% of my time in beta at shipwright, and I was in beta for roughly six weeks.
There is a trade off for everything when it comes to ship building.

.. although you can launch into space with just a chassis, engine and reactor if you are particularly brave
