Many, many excellent thoughts. I especially share your beef about JTL using so few assets from any of the XvT or XWA series. It was pretty clear to me that many of the folks salivating in anticipation of JTL hoped they'd see a gunboat or a Starchaser. This was very disappointing.
In no particular order, let me add to your list, especially since we have a correspondent reading.
1. We need the ability to dumb-fire warheads. I know I could use the warheads more effectively if I could dumb-fire them. The lock-ons are pathetic, even on large targets. In the same vein, where the heck are the mag-pulse, ion pulse and other warheads from the previous games?
2. Allow everyone to fly certain "neutral" ships. What an incredible disappointment that I can't fly a YT-1300 because it's a "privateer-only" ship. What bollocks. What the heck was Han then? A commander in the "privateer navy"? Many of us wanted to fly a ship like the Falcon (or one of the other YT series, for that matter). I believe there should be a privateer multi-player ship and privateer fighters, but for Pete's sake, don't take the iconical ships away from everybody else.
3. Space and ground game integration. What we haveare two distinct games right now. We need to knit them together to make the systems more interdependent. One example I like to use a lot is the ability to conduct planetary airstrikes from space. Both of the Prima guides I have bought have shown that "bombardment" is supposed to be a faction perk.
Here's a better suggestion: Player-coordinated orbital bombardment. Allow commandos the ability to use a special device (perhaps a faction-issued item) that "paints" a target and "relays" coordinates to player pilots in space who are orbiting a planet. Both commando and pilot must be overt to perform the task, so both would be at risk of attack from opposing faction players.
Imagine scrambling your guild members to their fighters in an attempt to fight off a bomber attack above the planet. Maybe the now safe areas right above planets would be filled with overts to fight for supremacy. Bring it on, I say.
The attacking pilot's skill level would determine how quickly he got the coords and could lock on and release the ordnance, which would go flying toward the planet's surface, where, moments later, players around the target would see a big explosion. The commando's skill level would also come into play as far as determining how successful the hit was.
Another simple suggestion would be to allow loot from ships other than ship accessories. What if you found a crystal in space and a capacitor on the ground? What's wrong with this?
4. Allow for space commerce. The same Prima guides that promise factional bombardment also strongly hint that space mining will be added to the game at some point. Read these clues if you haven't so far. I think mining operations would be great, I also think it would be great if shipwrights used architect-crafted shipyards to produce ships instead of magically making them on the ground (though lag would be a concern, I know). Also, someone (can't remember who) submitted a great design proposal for space commerce involving players in freighters taking missions from terminals to haul around cargo. That too, would add to space commerce.
5. A territorial control system in space similar to what's being proposed for ground in GCW revamp. Controlling space like we'll be able to control the ground would be great. Wipe out enough Imperial star bases and add Rebel ones. Pretty soon, the sector is crawling with increased NPC Rebel patrols and maybe capital ships orbiting planets and cruising the sector.
6. Allowing NPC factions to work in space, too. Is it my imagination or does my 5000 positive Binyare faction not do a darn thing to help me in space? Perhaps I am wrong.
7. This goes without saying. Adding space stations and capital ships that can be boarded and perhaps operated by players. We have waited so long for this. I am still optimistic this will be added at some point but I know it will be a ton of work for the devs. I can't wait to be able to actually attack a corvette in space, disable it and then board it with Rebel troops. Or an ISD for that matter.
