Right now, you want to be working on your skills. Once you train that first ship box, you might want to buy a ship with more mass, but the drops you get right now will be just fine for upgrades, provided you can use them. Secondly, a good joystick is good for flying. I use a Saitek Cyborg Evo. You don't want those crap ones, or one that's impossible to calibrate either. That's basically all you'll need as a new pilot.

One other comment. Since right now, you'll only be fighting tier 1 and 2 NPCs, match your speed and stay behind. They probably won't have rear turrets, and all you have to do is finish them off. That is, one on one.
