By joining the faction pilot proffession you ARE joining their faction so its totally realistic to be able to fly faction ships.
Remember JTL and SWG while play as the same game... they are 2 different entities. its being designed so that there is the greatest distance between the 2 while still being part of a team. So just because you are non faction on the ground doesnt mean you cant be faction in the air... or vise versa

im personally against this - i dont think neutrals should have access to the imp/reb skills until they join that faction - its unrealistic

so i will need to go neutral or rebel then take reb pilot to fly the xwing?
No u need to go reb to fly it neturals cant be a reb/imp pilot
They can actually, any ground faction can be privateer pilot and neutral can be Rebel/Imperial pilot in space aswell as just privateer
Works like this:
Ground Faction-------------Space Pilot Possibilities
Rebel--------------Privateer Pilot or Rebel Alliance Pilot
Imperial--------------Privateer Pilot or Imperial Navy Pilot
Neutral------------Privateer Pilot or Imperial Navy Pilot or Rebel Alliance Pilot

Im with you on that, if youre not an Imp/Reb you shouldnt be able to pilot their ships. But unfortunately if the devs dont do it there would be alot of whining.
But being aimp pilot dose not make you aimp solder on the ground. I did not see any storm troopers flying ties in the films.

I would think a neutral player could play a rebel pilot PvE, but they probably wouldn't be able to PvP since they can't go overt.

Icant see how people think by choosing the imperial pilot skill, as a faction neautral, they are joining the imperial faction - your not, your just qualifying to fly ships that are traditionally used by the imperial navy.

If you're flying Tie Fighters, you've joined the Imperial Navy.

Any way to make the little wings that fan out with the weapons go back to a non-combat position like when you launch into space, originally? Thanks
Oh, and where does the ARC 170 quest start?
