Yes they are...but you may want to consider getting something to hold the stick down (throttle is okay) Saitek sell suction cup feet for them
The X52 should be out about the same time as JTL...and it looks awesome

Both Thrustmaster and Saitek are making JTL-specific joysticks.
The Thrustmaster XWFCS will be more geared to Rebel craft, and the Saitek TIE-Controller will be mainly geared towards Imperial craft.
There are rumors that Thrustmaster will release a half-cockpit version with an astromech addon (probably Christmas until they get the astromech droids ready for the socket) but we'll see.
In the meantime, I suggest using the 'search forum' button for all of the 19,000 posts about joysticks.

The devs have stated that they are testing on the Logitech Xtreme 3D Pro joystick. I bought this joystick to play Desert Combat and was ecstatic to hear it was being used to test with. This joystick goes for about $30 at your local WalMart in the USA.

Can someone tell me how to enable the gamepad or joystick for space flight, and if so, will it work for planet based gameplay as well?
Am unable to find any info on this as of 10-21-04. I'm using the beta.
Thanks
