Did the traditional 1st person view for a while but you can see a much larger area in front and around your ship in 3rd person mode so I am using that now. I have a Playstation controller connected to my PC and it works great on JTL.

Reb. pilot, beta i made 3/3/2/2, in live atm am 2/2/2/1, I use both, like one post said above. In the 'brick' ywing, i perfer 3rd person, it help me evade enemy's better when i can see how my ship is moveing. With the faster ships, z and x, havn't gotten to the a yet, I use 1st, you can see better and it seem to me that the lead target retical is more accurate. One more point, if I am have'n trouble with a mission or group of high lvl mobs, its usually in 3rd person, then i switch back to 1st, i see more and last longer.

Imperial Pilot
3332 Flying an interceptor atm
I use the mouse and first person view. No cockpit. Ship gets in the way with 3rd person view.
I haven't had the pactience to setup the control on the joystick yet but I guess I'll give that a try.
Surprised so many ppl like the joystick. I though it was awful the first time I tried it.

I use a joystick myself, a Wingman Force 3D pro. Of course I use first perspective with no cockpit, as I am imperial and the front of that ship is pretty obstrusive.
You will know when a ship is behind you in first perspective. You will be getting hit going "damn where is that coming from?" lol. It is just my opinion but I perfer the immersion of the aformentioned combination.
Whatever floats your boat though, I mean it's your game play it like you want it.
However Jump to Lightspeed really does rock! SOE/LA really found an interesting way to intertwine the ground gam e and space. I'm just a little worried about content, because there are people mastering their pilot professions.

First person, cockpit view ON. I use a full CH Products HOTAS setup (Combatstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals), and set up my control template with the attitude that I should never have to take my hands off the stick and throttle during combat.
I'm currently a 2-1-1-1 Imperial Pilot. Hopefully I'll get to at least 2-2-1-2 this weekend.
I like the feeling of sitting in the cockpit, even with the decreased visibility. After getting the hang of reading the radar and HUD, I don't find the cockpit visibility to be a problem.

1st person, cockpit on, Logitech Attack3 joystick setup here. Loving JTL. This is the REAL star wars. SWG until now was nothing. IMHO

I like 1st person, Joystick, Kimo, with cockpit. Mainly because it just feels more real and less disorientating, but also because the recticul actually lines up properly in 1st person. Bad par tis, I fly in a Kimo mos tof the time. Not much view space in one of those babies!
Exception: turrets. The mouse moves them MUCH faster in 3rd than the joystick in 1st.

I'm a newb Rebel pilot 1/1/0/0 - just got JTL yesterday
Love 1st person view - always have for flying/driving/shooter etc....
Once i've done my missions though, and i'm off to a POI or another mission waypoint, i'll scroll on the mouse wheel to zoom out and enjoy more of the beautiful scenery!!!
Then back into 1st person to complete/finish the mission.

First person all the way for me. It's easier to judge distance to target (knowing when to manuever to avoid collision), plus I'm used to it from playing other flight sims like Wing Commander, X-Wing and it's successor X-Wing Alliance.
I use the dual throttle/joystick setup, Saitek X45. It's a pretty good controller. Only thing I don't like about it is the joystick itself is kind of stiff. But that might just be my particular one. Other wise it lets me manuever and fight a lot easier than using just a joystick only.
I'm only 1221 Alliance at the moment though so favorite ship is yet to be seen.
Edit: Noticed people making comments on this after I read everything. I fly with cockpit on, even in the restrictive view of the Y-Wing. It feels more realistic to me. But I really have no problem with finding my targets because the brackets surrounding the ship show through the cockpit anyways.

you know you can turn off the cockpit right? misc in game options, near the bottom.
that is news to me, but i like the cockpit view. plus in most of the neutral ships it really isn't that big of a hinderance. i triedthird person view - but it totally killed the immersion for me so i went back to first. of course the only way to play a flight sim is with a throttle and joystick - so no mouse here. so far i like the dunelizard, but i'm only 2-2-2-1.
