Always go into space with a wingmate, space can be very dangerous and have unexpected surprises

The tip to getting the advantage over an NPC ship when approaching head on.

Reduce your speed and start turning before you pass each other - then you're already 45-90 degrees into your turn and almost always get on his tail before he turns back to face you.

I got that from the "Dogfighting For Dummies" book

Actually no I didn't, but it's good advice anyway - works for almost any space combat game too.

The white named ships can not be damaged.. they are other players playing the game.

A joystick and perhaps a throttle are a great help. Mouse controls arevery unwieldy and imprecise for any ship, even after rearranging the sensitivty and dead zone.

Enjoy yourself and don't feel the need to rush through the pilot profession like you have to master tomorrow. There is great content in JTL so get in to character, roleplay, and just have a blast.

Don't shoot at a flight of 6 TIE's if you are solo and in a Z95?

Seriously, Wingmen.... don't leave em... don't leave home without 'em.

Get a player-made ship as soon as you can afford it. It controls ALOT better and is customizable. Also, without a player-made ship you can't hyperspace (and wheres the fun without that?? <g> )

  • If you ever get lost in space, you can open your Datapad (Ctrl-D) and select Autopilot to the waypoint of your takeoff station. You can, also, open the map and choose Autopilot from the objects on the right by right-clicking on the object.

  • If you have a booster equiped on your ship, you can use it to quickly close the distance on your enemies so they do not have enough time to locka missle on you.

  • Be sure to use the 'c' key to target any station you are approching. Once you get within 1000m you can issue a '/comm' to request ship repairs or landing clearance.

  • Shipwrights can help you with components, upgrades, and new ship chassis; be sure to see them for upgrades to the ship components you findas well.

your starter ship can handle 1/1/1/1 pilot just fine...and u should have enough loot to outfit a store bought starfighter chassis

What is one positive tip you havelearned in betathat you wouldpass on to new players starting JtL for the first time?

Something tells me you guys want new 'tuesday tips', correct?

Tip #1... The game is fun not being a Jedi Knight, and getting ganked 23/7, however, flying around in space overt isn't fun, neither is trying to level overt... Tip, drop jedi, and have some fun as a shipwright/pilot.... reminds me of the days when jedi meant nothing, and the game was fun...

(ok, all dev bashing aside now...)

Tip #1. If it beeps at you, don't shoot.

#2

Trying to kill fellow players thinking it is an NPC gets them mad.

#3

Don't hang around 'noob' sectors when your not a noob, you get asked to go do their mission for them.

#4 Don't try to jump a single tie fighter near a base... 10 bucks says there are 4 more around the corner waiting for you.

#5 You need a Capacator in order to fire you lasers...

#6 Keep an eye on you max hitpoints or armor on your components, they decay really fast, and you need to repair them and/or get new ones.

#7 Don't go to kessel before your a master pilot... you won't get to see anything.

#8 You can't dodge missles... so kill the missles carriers first.

#9 Don't try and kill medium fighters... they have very large 'top' and 'bottom' areas, and are almost impossible to do damage to.

#10 If your engins die, eject, it saves your other components.

#11 If you get jumped by a group of NPC's that you can't kill, go for hyperspace... You can't out-run em, because they have 'magical engines'

#12 If wanting time, it's better to turn around and head strait at them, and use the time it takes them to turn around for shelter.

Don't run around begging for a ship. Ships -eat- resources, resources cost time/game money, and well, most Ship Wrights will /addignore you if you become a pain.

Your starter ship costs you nothing and allows you to get the feel for space which you will need later on.

Being nice and -helpful- to Ship Wrights will pay off in the long run.

EG. loot is nice, but having a Skipray may be nicer... Also most SW's are going to be looking for Steel, Aluminum, Radioactive, Copper, Iron, Siliclastic Ores, and some New ores/gasses etc. that are just hitting the server. If you can spare the time & have lots to spare, buy harvestors , find out what is needed and help the SW reach master. Co-operation will go a long ways to driving down the price -you- have to pay for a ship.

Do not expect to buy a ship like a house or a speederbike. You might get lucky and get a -used- ship cheaper, but with used ships, it's buyer beware.

Keymap, Keymap, Keymap. Know what and which button does what is priceless in combat, so you don't have to guess which keyboard button makes the reactor a target.

(Hint - Always Kill the reactor on capture style missions.)

Wapons Grouping is helpful, when you get the higher level ships, (Tier 3 & above).

Speed Kills. Too fast you over shoot all the time. Too slow and your sheild looks like swiss cheese.

Repair in space during missions, if you are doing a mission that goes on for ever.. Or you are getting killed in the second part or third part of a mission.Note: escort missions, or chase type missions you need to stay with the escort or target as much as you can.

Escort Missions. Your job is to keep the other ship intact, not to chase the bad guys far from your escort. By the time you have killed all of the first wave the second wave is chowing done on your mission. Pump a few shots into the bad guys, scare then away , stick close to the escort and you'll pass the mission.

Kill Missions. Look for the leader. 90% of the time he is your -real- target.

Duty Missions -

Destroy- aka kill pirates /rebels/Imperials/hutts etc.

Lastfor as long as you can take it. Save your missiles for -tough- times.

-Plan- on repairing during the move to new patrol waypoints. (You get several waves at each patrol point.)Patrol/repair/patrol.

Escort Missions - See above.

XP:

The highest Xp you can get is usually in a system that is not a starter system.

Starter systems are: Tatooine, Corellia (& Talus) , Naboo & Lok.

Loot Items Vs Crafted:

Loot may be nice, and at first a real money saver. However, having a set of weapons -fine tuned- to a specific task is devastating. Also with the mass bugets of ships only being so much, getting someone to cook you a uber Mark 2 engine with a low masswill let you fit in better guns and shields.

For example :

For a few days I had the pleasure of running around with a ship that had lots of punch.

I had aDisrupter and Ion Cannon group as one. The Disrupter was crafted to Devour Armor, and the Ion Cannon Killed shields and systems.

I put experimentaion points in -specifically- to make these weapons hit harder in thier -specialized- areas.

Droids and Boosters:

Eat Mass. Sometimes you want the booster installed, to get to a mission faster. Or uninstalled so you can cram in something very important, like countermeasures.

You'll have to figure out which is more important for which mission.

Some missions are missile city, some are not, choose wisely.

I have never felt the need for a droid, yet. When you go up in tiers, you pick up more specialized droid commands.

And for all you who are wondering what a tier is..It is a Row of boxes in the skill tree.

EXP and level advancement is not the same as the ground game. Racing up one part of the skill tree excusively is a foolish move. 1- You won't be able to fit level 7 parts into a level 1 ship. 2- The Skill trainers will not jump you up to thenext tier until all four of thefirst tier boxes are full, so don't kill yourself trying to grind.

My personal rule of thumb on when to move up on ships.

1- You get vaporised trying to reach a waypoint, by mobs one tier higher than you.

2- You absolutely cannot cram in a weapon 1 tier higher than your shiplevel allows.

Eg. Trying to cram a level 3 blaster into a level 2 ship (Y-wing/DuneLizard/Tie (standard))

3- You can afford it several times over. They will not be cheap, and you can expect repair prices to eat yourcredits.

4- You cannot compleate any of the missions in the tier you are trying to fill next.

A) Either Buddy up, B) Knuckle Down andbuy a ship.

make sure your ship has all the needed components first( like an engine.) otherwise you'll be floating in space unable to move 4k from the station, and this game doesn't have a tow service.
