none were found in beta, I hope none ever exist. Shipwrights get 15 experimentation points on engines, boosters, weapons and a few other components so tapes should not go in IMHO.

Five stars to anyone that answers this question:
In schematics such as the Mark I Durasteel Plating there are option optional subcomponents such as the Mark I Armor Upgrade. Are these items crafted or looted?

Crafted. The Upgrades do various things and have tradeoffs, in the example you gave there is a Mass reduction (that also reduces the strength of the armour) and a Effectiveness increase (that also increases the mass). Check out the links in the top sticky for more information.
