*nod nod*
I have the Logitech 3D Digital Extreme and it's really good... 12 buttons, twistable stick, etc. Very nice.
I bought it from Amazon for 24 bucks, then just used the cheapest shipping possible. Total came out to be 31 bucks, which is 15 dollars cheaper than Best Buy.

I use a mouse and a nostromo speedpad. While I was loathe to use something for flying *other* than a stick, I found the configurations still too over sensitive. I couldn't get that extra fine control that the freeform 'joystick' the mouse provided.
The speedpad has about 16 buttons, a D-pad, a scroll wheel I use for throttle... and 3 additional shift states. Plenty of buttons, all programable.

I bought this joystick when JTL was in beta. It is a nice joystick. However I just had to replace it as when centered it would drift in varying directions. (When centered the stick would sit in different places causing the drift.)
Saitek has a very nice mechanical centering device. I recently bought the X52 system and must say it is the most impressive stick I have ever used.

Does a joystick really make it that much better to fly?
Yes, especially if you get one with the twist handle so you can control YP&R all with the stick... very convienent

it is personal preference... alot of people swear by them but there are quite a few that would rather use mouse and keys. Myself, I use a MS Sidewinder precision 2 but the stick is too loose so I am looking to buy another one.
