Thread: To all those unable to damage ships in space, this might be your problem

Something I have noticed that may help.

Don't aim directly at th elead crosshairs. If you do, you will almost always miss. You will see a "shield hit" because the client thinks you hit, but the server knows better and no damage is done.

Try aiming somewhere between the ship itself and the crosshairs. This may take some practice and works differently on different targets (depending mostly on their speed).

Hope this helps.

Just to add my 2 cents, I can confirm this.

I just recently changed from a satellite company to a cable company and my game got much better.

I had the same problems mentioned above (disconecting, not registering direct hits in space, etc.) and since I changed all is OK and a lot faster.

Hope this helps our fellow gamers.

Yeah, satellite technology is very cool, but it just isn't fast enough to support MMO gaming.

It can't be fixed either. The problem is the takes about 0.34 seconds for a packet to go up to the satelite back back down again. Another 0.34 seconds for a response packet to come back. That's the speed of light to and from a satellite in geosyncronous orbit. Nothing technically can be done about it. It's also the reason why Modulo 128 flow control was added to the X.25 communication protocol way back when.

That is some great technical info. Is it a hobby of yours?

So we just need to find a way to send information faster then the speed of light! Sounds simple enough

I'm running on cable, and the Royal Guard Interceptor is the only ship that ever does this to me (lots of shield flashing w/ little to no damage). I'm guessing there might be a problem with the hitbox, or somthing like that. All the other ships I've no trouble hitting.

Yup, very easy. Quantum entanglement.

Now how do you incorporate that into a device....

Heh, they're starting to be able to do this, now all you need are a pair of monster cyclotrons and a small nuclear reactor to power the thing...

can all of you that use a sat ISP because there is no other choice please post where you live so i can make sure i never move there

Yeah, you know where No-Where is? I live just east and south of that. When you see the cows.... turn left =).

In all seriousness, I had so many people tell me that I was just doing it wrong. I wasn't hitting the right spot, it takes a bit of skill/practice, etc. Or like one person mentioned, it might be a quest, or some one's mission... etc. I got all the excuses until I cornered a CSR in live chat. He still was very careful to not say that I could NOT play JTL.

Although I must admit, I am a bit miffed. I refused to buy JTL for so long because this is the best connection that I can get. (the account start date is for account #4, I've been around a bit longer then a few months) It would have beennice to know that I also wuld not be abe to access most of the ROTW content as well. I just got 2 copies of ROTW thinking it would be a ball... welp, no more shuttle fees at least =)

I just know the frustration that I felt about it, and wanted to make sure that others weren't trying hopelessly as I was.

But.... now i'm really not a geek at all, but 2 things about this kinda bothered me. Couldn't they count the hits that are seen client side, and accept that on the server side? In other words, due to my icky connection, would it be some huge feat to patch the game so that when i see hits occuring on my PC, it registers and tells the server that I hit it?

Or, at least print some where (i.e. system requirements/recommendations) that satelite ISP is not acceptable for playing? I would have just left ROTW alone if I had known that I couldn't do it. Now it's 60 bucks gone, and I can't return it, and they can't remove it from my account with out permanently bugging me =(

I have also been reading suggestions....Microwave isn't offered in my area, DSL isn't offered, cable isn't offered. Any one have any thing else I can try?

Unfortunately this isn't a very good idea. Any time you do things like that, you make yourself vulnerable to the worst kind of hacking.

Ever play the original Diablo on the Battle.net way back in the day? Remember all the PKers who could kill you in one hit from across the map with a sword swing? Yeah, that's the kind of thing that happens if you allow client-side data to influence server-side hit and damage. It just can't be done.

On the other hand, perhaps this is your opportunity! Research the market and start your OWN internet company way out there! =)

The Jedi would move to block the missile, the missile would move, the Jedi would move to intercept again, the missile would move again, etc. Eventually the Jedi would tire or make a mistake and that’s when the Magic Missile would hit." -- Red Mage

I'm no expert but I'd wager that as soon as something like that is done there would be several cheat websites up and running offering a download hack for the client so every shot would count
