A compromise would be to just have them knock you up real good ...
like for instance take away 30% of shields/hull/...
That way everyone will be quite scared to get hit, they do serious amount of damage, but one hit is not lethal.
That way if you are good enough you can avoid the asteroids and have others slam into them and die in a chase.
And lag will not kill you. Unless you get hit like 3 times in case of serious lag, in which case we SHOULD complain.
Complain about the lag, not the asteroids.

Actually there was an online game about 5 years ago that already did it, jumpgate. They had collision on stations and asteroids, but not on ships. Also, they even took it a step further...the amount of damage a collisoin did was based on the spee dyou were going when you hit the object

I just noticed that the nebulas (which do look beautiful)don't damage you either, even though the devs said that they tooshould be dangerous places. It really dosen't happen that often that you get warped into a nebula, and they are drawn far away too.

Im not sure if that's true. I for one know thatI would be try it, even though it most definitely would be lethal. But if you don't dare to take the chance, you can stay away from them.

It should be pretty easy I believe. They already have collision detection, it just doesn't hurt your ship. All they have to do is add the following pseudocode segment:
If ObjectHit = Asteroid
DamagePlayership;You did "=" instead of "==" !!!!!!!!!
I know, that's why I said it was pseudocode

I agree with you, and if they could make it so that asteroids/trees draw further away it would be neat. You shouldn't have to be killed if you can't see what you get killed by.
Of course, that would create a tremendous amount of lag... ![]()
Which, in effect, would create a reverse reaction: creating huge lag spikes causing you to crash into asteroids.

Collision and friendly fire should be in the game, that way when some greedy little z-95 cuts off my slow 'beep' y-wing, just to take a couple shots at my target, I can teach him a lesson. And one more rant, any unattended ground vehical, especially those that park in the starport doorways, should be attackable by all. We really need a game mechanic, for rude behavior, that places a bounty on those who only think of themself's.

Absolutely not, I cannot stress the fact how much lag has caused me grief. I was doing the Tier 3 mission 2 with some other peeps, now this is one of those 3 hour missions, with 5 parts to complete. Halfway through it, I hit a huge ass lag spike, that freezes everything for a whole 2 minutes. After that I lost all shields, had no rear armor, and half my systems were down. JTL is fine right now, the lag is the only real problem here, do not cause more

I Have to say if you ever watch the npc ship get them selfs stuck in a asteroid, and then you can't finish them off, thats when you wish that collison was real. but I say add it in, maybe not make the damage extreme, but make it so there is some damage from it. and for sure make sure the Npc ships feel it, maybe they will try to go around instead of through it.

Remember: You would then have to track every space object to every player in the area. You would chew up that much more bandwidth tracking every single asteroid with pinpoint precision because if you can smack into asteroids they'd have to be in the SAME PLACES for everyone. Right now they're just eye candy so it doesn't really matter where they are since they aren't really obstacles. If they WERE you'd have to agressively track them.
It would make space even laggier than it already is for users who just meet the requirements.
