What the title says.
I'd like to dodge the asteroids in my ship. That would be alot more fun than just bumping off of them.

I'm fairly sure they don't do this because of the lag it would cause. Because the server would have to track all the astroids. sometimes if people are mineing in the same sector it can cause lag.

They could do what they have, or had, in Jumpgate.
ANY thing you ran into going faster than about 50 spd, BOOM.
If that happened, Kash, dant and all the rest of the sectors would be VERY interesting to PvP in.

Lag cant be the problem; as it is now, if you hit an asteroid, you already bump off it and it creates animations and sounds on the client side to let you know; how much harder could it be to throw some damage numbers on that, it could still be on the client side, and as for others reading the damage, it would propagate the same to other players as conventional combat damage does now.
I agree, dodging asteroids (space stations, frigates, etc) is what made Star Wars flight exciting in the OT. It should be dangerous.

NPC damage, well, thats another story. Obviously NPCs are not smart enough to avoid asteroids intelligently, and there would be little that could be done to keep players from exploiting that weakness and just scraping off every attack.
A possible solution would be to create a 300m "turn-back / break-off" sphere around all damage objectswhich would cause all NPCs to not come anywhere near them. Big enough that they could never hit the objects but small enough that they could still fire on someone who was asteroid hiding.
But player damage should be on anyway. JTL is twitch based, and if you cant avoid ginormous objects then you should be damaged or die.

A more complete damage model would be welcome. I don't mind the model at present, although definately would like to see a more realistic approach to space damage, even if it meant that your shields got pounded, bringing in the usage of the Reb shield programs.

NPCs can be given avoidance routines in their AIs. They just skipped them, since they weren't needed.

as much debris i crash into mining, i can't go along w/ that idea. i'm a sloppy pilot anyway, but its almost unavoidable chasing those material chunks after you shoot them off the asteroid. espcially since most of them are in or around asteroid fields anyway.

you can always be more carful when mining, i don't do alot of mining, but i did notice that usuley there is a side that is not in the astroid field, and your shields should beable to take the damage from the small chunks that you would encounter. it will require a bit of skill but then again when has mining ever been safe.

If they do consider collision damage with rocks, it should only be with the larger static rocks, not the minor debris rocks that only spawn when you're in the field.

I agree. Collision damage should only be for the major chunks, freighter+ size ships, space stations and other BIG things. Tiny asteroids should be deflected by nav shields and hull integrity by design.
