I have a joystick, but I think that using the mouse is more accurate. But the throttle controller is a great help!

I agree, the joystick seriously helps.
I have a really cheap Saitek St90 that was like 14 bucks from gamestop.
It only has 3 buttons and a digital throttle control, and I find it extremely easy to pilot and use.
So, you don't have to go out and spend a ton of money. Any joystick will help.

I bought a gamepad for something like $12 or $15. I found it easier to play with than the keyboard.

I also remapped my keys in the following way.
NumPad0 targets target under reticle.
DEL targets nearest target
NumPad4 matches target speed.
This way, I can use my arrow keys to roll, and still have basic other commands right at my fingertips with my other hand on the joystick.
Just a tip i thought might help further.

You missed a question mark in your title.
Yes, it's definitley worth it. Don't need a fancy joystick, it seems - any will probably make a world of difference.

I use a Saitek X45 (full HOTAS) which I purchased for playing Lock On: Modern Air Combat... And I can't imagine playing SWG:JTL without it. I only have to take my hands off the stick and throttle to move the mouse over to click 'I wanna land here' or 'repiar full'. And if I configure it better, I don't even need to do THAT. (And I'm not even using 1/3 the functions I COULD, yet.)

Well I started in beta with keyboard/mouse then a week later switched to joystick (Saitek X45). Joysticks are defenitely help... BUT I can't say that pilot with joystick will have absolute superiority... just slight advantage. So to say, if you dont care to spend 30-80$ on joystick - go ahead you wotn waste yoru money... if not you will still be competitive with mouse.

I really wanted to use a joystick cuase it just seemed like it would be more fun,but I've found I keep returning to the mouse and keyboard every time I try to use it.I just have'nt been able to get the same smoothness or accuracy with the stick as I can with the mouse. The keyboard did feel really akward at first, but the more I played the more I got used to it and it feels pretty natural now.Maybe with more practice I'd get better with the stick, but don't really feel motivated to since the mouse is so easy.I have wanted to try a gamepad but have'nt really had the chance, mine does'nt seem to be working well with jtl.

Half the fun in a flight game is getting to finally use something else than a keyboard mouse combo.
MS Sidewinder joystick with 9 buttons and a "shift button" function to make it a total of 18 buttons is very cool. Ive just tried JTL one evening so far, and only programmed 7 buttons (targeting and firing weapons) , but Im sure Ill make use of everyone of them in the end. I also only take my hands of the joystick to click "Land" or chat.
That "shift" function will be great for adding macros of the pilot commands etc I think.
