why do ships stop moving when they have no engines anymore? wouldnt they continue in a straight line at the same velocity as when they lost thier engines?
why do i stop when i turn off my engines?
did the devs fail physics?

Yeah in Beta there were lots of arguments, about what is realistic and what isn't.They changed the flight models quite a lot.
Basically after much argument the current flight system was chosen because it represents the "Star Wars" method of space flight - similar to aircraft dogfighting - that George Lucas favoured in the movies. That's why you can't turn very well when stopped, contrary to how it would be in space.
Personally I'd have liked a flight system like Frontier: Elite II

Dont think of it as turning your engines off, think of it as turning your reverse thrusters on

Ahh yes, accelerate towards a target for several minutes, blow past in a fraction of a second, then spend several more minutes slowing back down for another pass.
There's been a lot of various space sims that have used both sets of "physics". The more realistic physic engines generally aren't fun.
Who knows, maybe the space in the star wars galaxy is really, really dense and causes enough friction to stop them with their engine off

Thrust one direction, turn 180 degrees and shoot the guy behind you. That's what is missing, and would probably be space combat 101 if there were ever such a thing as space combat in the real world. Oh well.

Yeah and why are they visible? Ya can't see lasers in spaceNo particles to pick the light up!
dont forget the power of a laser drops off very quickly (square of the distance comes to mind)

How can I be in a ship without a helmet that doesn't have lifesupport? (Tie... I'm a rodian
)
I don't think we should be talking about how possible these things are. I mean, the Space station have searchlights that would never be able to hit anything but the ship, but then again, would it be as interesting without it?
