Thread: Y-8 mining ship
Seems the gun turrets on the Y-8 have a severely limited firing arc.
The top gun does not shoot any lower then the horizontal 90 of the ship even though you can see lots of space.
The same goes for the bottom turrent...it shoots no higher the horizontal 90 of the ship or near the fin.
They really need widen the rifing arcs.
Other wise your better off mining with a POB ship with Mining lasers (crew of two). And no need for a fighter escort.
Anyone know why the mining ship has two operations chairs? Kinda seems redundant.
Im about ready to empty out my yacht and make that thing my decorated ship. The interior is one of the best in the game, hands down.
Bug fix - there was just one operations chair and one 'normal' chair. But when you stood up from the normal chair you were trapped as you were infront of the chair and couldn't walk through the bar on the floor. The operations chair puts you behind it when you leave the station, so it was easier to make both chairs 'operations' ones.

A few friends of mine and I have experimented extensively with the Y-8. In a word, we're very disappointed. We expected a ship that would let you park off an asteroid and mine it. However, the placement of, well, everything is such that this just isn't possible.
A mining ship should support the following hard points:
- One hard point that will accept a mining laser for the purpose of blasting off the initial chunks.
- Two to three hard points that will accept mining lasers or tractor means to finish the job.
- Two to three hard points that will accept weapons to defend the platform while it is operating.
A mining ship should be have enough defensive capability to park for a few hours and mine the asteroid--it should have to move.
Hello,
Last 2 days have been spent collecting over 31000 units of different ores and items to craft the parts needed to outfit the y-8 with all of its y-8 only parts, 2 Elite mining lasers a POB only engine, Reactor and Shields and a 30000 size hol(more on this in a moment)
While a firend and I were greatly impressed with the overill increase in performance of the POB and y-8 parts there is one serious suspect part on this list.
Prior to the moment this levaithan left the ground for the first time I had been using a m22 Krayt, tripped out with 2 Mark 3 mining lasers and a lev 10 re'd gun for defense. This allowed me to mine as effeciently as I could given the limited hold of 1550.
The Y-8 Elite mining lasers seem to be no more efficent than the mark III ones. I had somewhat hopped that the Elite version would have simplified the process of mining down to say 2 hits rather than having the same effect as the Mark 3's busti it till it disolves style of hunting. The point of this is:
The y-8 turns like a pig as it should its huge so i cant chase the rocks like i do in a krayt
The Hold is huge and there is no current way of telling whats in it till you land to view it or find a mining station to mock sell your goods. Whats the use in having a 30000 hold capacity if there is no way in hell you could ever possibly fill it in less than a month of chasing rocks.
Someone please tell me this in not the final expected prerfromnace of these guns, because if it is as it has been mentioned components are the last hope of a finacial future for shipwrigts and if this is so im afraid I couldnt winllingly sell these parts to customers knowning how bad they truley perform, for me it would be like theft.
Thank you

I'd love to put this on my issues list, but I think this is more of a pilot issue. If you don't mind, please take this issue to the Pilot forum. Tomo is a great correspondent, he'll get the word out if they don't already have it.

Though I don't know how your numbers where in the crafting process, I do know there is an issue with UT being missing from asteroid resources, yet being required in the schematics. Have to check later if this effects the mining laser, but I'd bet that when that issue is resolved, you'll be able to craft them a bit better.

Until some improvements are made to the turret placement, I think the best you can do for mining is part about 500m below an asteroid, and hop in the top turret, and just blast away. Certainly, you can do better with a fighter I would think, except the cargo hold is much bigger on the Y-8.

It has been my understanding that asteroid minning is percentage based. Meaning that each time you blow up an asteroid or tractor one in you get a % increase of your hold. Now keep in mind that I haven't tested this yet, but this is just something that I have heard so I make no promises as to the accuracy of this statement. But if this were an accurate statement and as described before that you get 1-3% for tractoring in a chunk of asteroid wouldn't that ultimately make the Y-8 with a 30k cargo hold a much more efficient miner even given the difficulties in minning.
1550 fighter hold @ 3% = 46.5 units
30000 Y-8 hold @ 3% = 900 units
that would be an effective increase of roughly 19x the effiency or 1900%. so if this is accurate (I will test it later when I get my Y-8 fully equipped) then the Y-8 may still be a viable minning vessel since you would only need to harvest one asteroid chunk for every 19 that you do with a normal fighter.
Unfortunately that isn't right, you do get around 3 times more with a tractor beam - but it is absolute, not % of hold.
In the last hours of Beta we had a few folk mining and barely scratched 0% on the Y-8 while we played around with different settings. While I love the Y-8 and DP knows it I really can't recommend it as a mining ship - stick to the Krayt / Bwing as most effective miners out there.
