Theres no reason why the loading screen can't look exactly like the 'whoosh' effect. It doesn't have to be a blue bar going from left to right.

Right. And it also doesn't say that there won't be a quick animation showing you entering hyperspace either.

Bleagh, didn't mean to do that.

Anyways. Durring the IGN preview it stated that hyperspace travel would be handled by clicking a box and a loading screen.

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't this totally destroy immersion? I'd much rather have it set up like XWA where you pressed a key within proximity of a hyperlane entrance and got the whole "Whoosh" effect.

Anyone else going to be rather disappointed if we aren't able to actuallysee our ships entering and exiting hyperspace? It would seem to be kinda self-defeating for a product titled Jump to Lightspeed to not even visually portray the occurance.

Would any devs browsing the forums be able to comment on this by any chance?

I totally agree actually. One of the coolest effects I've ever seen, was for a space sim I can't even remember now, it might have been Privateer.

You'd fly into a 'jump point' (designated spot in space that woudln't crash you into a planet while in hyperspace) and hit J, and the cockpit would warp from and blammo! Your gone.

Maybe, but that would lack the whole audio part of it, and it would be rather staggered and just seem flat out unnatural.

Now if after clicking the box (which to me would seem to be really annoying since it would be much easier in itself to hit a key to activate hyperspace when you wanted to) you got the jump to lightspeed sequence followed by aloading screen with the tunnel-effect I wouldn't mind so much... so long as upon entering the next area you had the exiting hyperspace sequence.

I totally agree.

I think they should have your ship zoom off into hyperspace, let you look at the blue swirls for a few seconds, and then give you the loading screen. Then once its loaded, it still looks like hyperspace for a few seconds before you see the stars rush at you as you decelerate into normal space.

A neat thing they could add in keeping with the Imperial crackdown, would maybe there would be an interdicter and instead of dropping out at your destination, all of a sudden there is a huge ISD on you. Or maybe it just sets up shop between two sectors.

Yep, maybe they could do that via instanced zones?

Anyways, another thought thats been creeping up on my is the absurdity of having to click a box. Wouldn't it be much more satisfying, simple and practical to be able to simply hit a key when near a hyperlane to enter hyperspace?

I mean, the line from the films is "Punch it Chewie!" not, "Chewie, click the yes option on the box that just popped up."

That very well could be the way it will happen. It better.

So far, we only know you can jump to hyperspace at the end of zones. It makes sense to me. They seem to need to have some loading (every thing isn't going to be seamless), so why not add in some cool eye candy that fits into the universe? I'd rather not have a boring "Loading..." screen comparied to the hyperspace.

"Wouldn't it be much more satisfying, simple and practical to be able to simply hit a key when near a hyperlane to enter hyperspace?"

Maybe you can. Maybe that is something people will ask for during beta. The menu is there mainly so people know what is going on. So they don't cross the server zone and automaticly end up on the other end of the star system. It gives them the option of moving or saying "opps, I'm flying to close to the end of the zone. Better fly back a little."

And yah, there CAN be sounds while the loading screen is up. You hear (at least I do) the music behind in the game while loading, no reason why there can't be music/sound while hyperloading.

What's most disappointing is that you can skip space all together if you want to and just "magically" arrive in your destination spaceport.

Ya, that kind of bothered me too. I have thought some about how to make it feel like actually getting in your ship means somthing, without completely penalizing getting in your ship. With insta-fly there's no reason to use your ship just to go to another planet.

Some hair brain thoughts from 5:00am:

a) take out the instant jump to another planet.

b) put in a cost for the amount of stuff you are carrying on the commercial shuttle, and maybe also the *type* of stuff you are carrying; so no packing 50 tons of ore and other junk in your carry-on. And a random check by the imps for illegal stuff in your luggage; eg sliced stuff, spices, etc... (just like RL commercial airlines). Don't want to be TOO hard on the people that don't get JTL, so its negotiable.

I think that would create a market for player-owned shuttle service; ie no luggage penalties, and you avoid any imperial entaglements. Also smugglers could actually feel like they are smuggling in their ship, and not being completely bypassed by the NPC shuttle service.

Hmm, ok this is too long for one post. Maybe I'll start a thread or something tomarrow... err, later today :0.

In light ofthe new E3 thread, it looks like there's nothing to worry about.

(see the post about starcharts and hyyperlanes.)

That was probably Privateer. Freelancer and Freespace also had awesome hyperspace effects (respectively subspace).

I totally agree. That UI box thing is lame. I read somewhere there will be a little animation, though.

I just hope we get to see the wormhole effect on our loading screen instead of a loading bar.
