Tractor beam would be neat. I could cut off your piloting temporarily and pull you closer to the ship. It would also be great for pulling fighters that you're supposed to dock with a bit closer to you, or pulling a friend's damaged ship out just in time.

If they make it anything like X-Wing Alliance or Tie Fighter there would be no greifing at all. All the player has to do is roll out of the way of the beam, and out last the power drain of their capasitor. With the beam taking power from the capasitor as well as the weapons this would be a short use weapon. Although a towing beam would be awsome to impliment, a few times i have found myself drifting in space after an attack with all systems gone and nothing to do but hit eject. If they added this to the game any other player could tow me in for repairs.

"The second way to gather the ore is to use a tractor beam. By using the tractor beam, space miners will be able to get a higher yield of ore, but it will be a bit trickier than just blasting them away. You will have get close enough to the asteroid chunks to get into the range of the tractor beam and then pull them into your ship. The asteroid chunk will get closer and closer to you until it is "transferred" into your cargo hold. Your cargo hold will have a meter on your heads up display so you can tell how full your cargo hold is. "

Does it work this way for anyone. I just pull the chunk till it flies through my belly (Sorry for the FB reference)

Sorry, just couldn't resist.

We can only assume at this point that it works this way. However there is another post explaining the difficulty of getting all the "guns" to target/see the stuff to actually do it properly.

Recently started the mining quests, and I guess I need to know how to use the tractor beam. I go to the waypoint in Corellia Space, target the freighter, and use only the tractor beam on it...next thing I know it is destroyed. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

That's actually (from what I saw when I did it, yesterday) what's supposed to happen, as long as you used just the tractor beam. Didn't it tell you that you completed the mission?

I haven't finished that line of quests yet, but you might try the Pilots forum or check the Quests forum. I know one of the two will have your answer

Take a look at your weapon groupings (G) and make sure that the tractor beam is in its own group. Once you do that, just push the key that corresponds (firing only your tractor beam). Possibly you have been firing at the same time.

Little hint. Do the tractor beam in small increments. At certain points you will have waves of fighters come in. If you just blast away with the tractor beam you will get more than you can handle very quickly.

Good luck.

You also need to be VERY close to the freighter in order for it to work. My recommendation is to basically bump into it then start the tractor beam (personally I use the keymap to set a button to "Toggle Tractor Beam").

Also check you have spare space in your inventory and do not have any "Iron asteroid" as that could interfere with the mission.

Be aware there is currently a bug in a later mission (escort the Y-8 convoy), if when you launch then no waypoint is given after a minute or two then go do something else and watch the patch notes for a fix.
