Thread: epulse causing griefing

Ok, I'm not really sure how epulse works but I've been on the receiving end of it. We had a group of 5 folks parked outside a neutral space station, when we were ready to head out to our mission, everyone exploded. No one in our group could have done it. It did total damage to everyones ship, not just partial damage, so I assume it was epulse3.

Can someone with epluse3 just randomly blow up anyone he wants to? Wouldn't this be considered griefing? With their anti-griefing policies, why in the worlds would SOE have such an ability? Should they have just called it /egrief?

I've done this accidentally as a matter of fact.

I was with two groupmates and a large wave of fighters was approaching us. I decided I wanted to look cool so I went ahed and epulse3'ed and everything blew the heck up!

I was lol'ing and then I noticed that I couldn't see my groupmates on the radar. At first I thought I must have warped to some part of the map or something but then my groupmates were like, "what happened?" "why did we all blow up?"

I stopped laughing out loud and began apologizing profusely

I haven't used /epulse3 in the vicinity of players since that day, and I actually assumed this only happened to those with whom you were grouped. but, apparently, you can blast any player with it.

Now, I'm by no means a griefer, but part of me would like this exploit to stay in though >8) it's a lot of power, and power is fun. but of course the rational part of me has already /bug'ed it - since power, inevitably corrupts.

What can I say, i'll be honest - having been a long-time FPS player I know how fun it can be to grief (spawn-kill in FPS terms) but I know how many times more annonying it is to GET griefed.

Therefore, this needs to be fixed ASAP before more master privateers go crazy blowing innocent bystanders away.

I think thats been fixed. Now when i try to use Epulse sometimes it tells me there are friendly in the areas. Which is cool and all, but annoying, why dont they just make it so it dosnt affect freindly mobs and dosnt affect players outside of deep space.

I certainly hope so. But if the original poster had this happen last night, I'd say it isn't yet.

I, too, have accidentally blew up my entire group, along with 5 Ywings. since then, I've only used it strategically, which was the intent of designing it that way. Unfortunately, there are those that will abuse it.

For instance, last night, I was helping a freind on his Storm Squadron exit mission. There were only 4 of us. There was another privateer in the group, but could only do epulse2.

So, right after the escort leg, the last leg (with gunboats and other rebs) would spawn. The rest of the group high-tailed it 2km away, while I sat tight. As soon as the rest of the group was safe, I hit boost and full throttle towards the baddies, and when I got close to the gunboat, hit epulse3. Immediately, 6 of the escorts were annihilated, and the gunboats were hurtin'.

Then the other group hit boost and did his epulse2 (which is considerably weaker, actually) and did further damage. Then the Imperial did bomber strike against the gunboat. At this time I was returning and hit the sucker with spacebombs and mk4 protons.

Done. Took us 3 tries, though. The first time, none of the specials fired! As soon as you're in range, that gunboat unloads on ya, and you still have about 500m before you can launch epulse3.

That being said, it is a very useful tool. Personally, I think the fact that you lose your capacitor energy and all your shields is sufficient penalty, although if they made it to where, like you say, unfireable when friendlies are nearby, that would be agreeable to me.

It will only work if you have killable targets in the area. Which means you have to atleast have some yellow dots on your radar. I don't know how close they have to be to you in order to allow it to be used though.

Huh? I guess you have never accidentally killed other players. It even says in the handbook that it is a non-discriminate burst of energy.

Other players can be killed by this blast, no matter what zone or state of declaration! Be very careful when using it.

I suspect it will no longer do it when 11.3 hits.

This my friend is why good idea's get nerfed in multi-player games. With great power come great responsibility. You get 5 stars for being honest, but the second highlighted statement, do you really, I could never see any fun with this type of play. I just don't understand this idea of joy that come's from griefing someone else. It is no challenge, no skill, no nothing except maybe tick'n off a fellow playmate, who most likely will just stop playing with you....is there any such thing as honor anymore.Making masterin Kessle with the added danger of PVP was perfect, untill the griefing started, now the Pirates....oh sorry ment Privateers, get nerfed. You know after a lot of people read this post, not allbut a lot, they are just gonna have to try it, and tell there friends, who just have to try it.....SOE reallyneeds to start enforcing their policies, especally those envolving 'fair play'. The few who do it and get baned, really will not make a dent in their profit margin.

You dont know that it was Epulse tho so dont go assuming it was. True, there are not likely many alternatives to what it was, but not knowing what it was and saying you assumed it was Epulse is just calling for a nerf without knowing the facts.

anyways

Epulse has a very short range for one. It should only affect grouped players as well. The fact that it can possibly..or from time to time affect ungrouped playeers is a bug that needs to be fixed tho. It doesn't need a reduction in power. Even in its present form, it is not nearly as strong as being able to call in a formation of TIEs.

Epulse1 and 2 have a short range. Epulse3 requires at least 1000m clearance.

One time, we were trying to do the master mission in Kessel. Along comes a YT-1300, trying to be helpful, he epulse3'd.

All 13 of us died instantaniously (sp?), and we were spread out all around the Vette and the gunboats, at least a 1000m radius.

It is very real, and the only thing that can kill another player when not overt.

Maybe this killed me today? But I saw no other player around....

Dorian' Hunter

BRIA

Mission is to destroy some imps and Firesprays.

I had disabled the Firespray and the Imp (Advanced or Agressor, not shure).

I had destroyed engines and reactors at both enemies- no other ships where around.....

I tried to dock at the imp ship, just for fun.....

My ship exploded, but nobody had shot at it, all my ships stats where absolutely unscratched, even the shields where at maximum.

I had reactor overload 3 and shields to front running at this time.....

I have NO IDEA why my ship has exploded at all, but thx for the decay..........

Looks like we have something like an armor-hole in space too.....

/bugged in game

That happened to me once. I was just waiting for a friend near a station when some privateer craft came near me and i payed no attention to it since i though it could not attack me. Then suddenly i explode and there was no red dots within 8km of me. Damn move is too powerful to be able to hurt neutral. It lets people use it to just grief people.

From personal expierence with trying Epulse 3 recently this is exactly how it worked. I tried it in Kessel several times against an Imperial harrassing our group and it failed to go off everytime with a message saying there was no hostile targets in range of some such.

Yes I have acciently killed other players with it but like I said there is a limit to how it can be used. If there are zero NPC's around or other attackable target you can't use Epulse 3. I don't know what range attackable targets have to be at so you can use Epulse 3, but I assume it was to be around 2km or so. I am just trying to point out that it does have a fail safe built in to it so that it can't be used to grief, but considering that most Stations have NPC's around them it really doesn't help much.
