The Empire spent time on research and development of advanced fighters. It was decided that attrition was a better model. They could throw swarms of cheaply made TIEs at the enemy. Yeah, they were going to lose some, but that was ok because they had plenty of pilots/materials to use. This was until they realized that perhaps it might be wise to provide some protection for their pilots and introduced classes like the Interceptor, Advanced, Oppressor, etc.
The rebels, on the other hand, had fewer pilots and even fewer resources to work with, so they had to make each of their fighters as good as they could to keep their pilots alive as long as possible. Oh, and by the way, the X-wing (at least if you believe the scuttle) was originally an Imperial design. Furthermore, the Mon Cals migrated over to the side of the rebels, and had arguably some of the best ship makers in the galaxy.

In truth the Empire cared about saving money, they relied on quanity not quality. The z-95 and the y-wing are old models, that were refitted with newer stuff. The x-wing and especally the a-wing, where a better design. That is why in the EU books and all the Rebel's could take on an adverage of 3:1 Imp.'s. In most cases it was 5:1. Of course this is a game not a movie, the ships are fairly balanced in game. *sarcasm on* Except for my favorite ship, the A-wing, even tho it is so small it should still have 100000k mass, its just not fair...*sarcasm off*. Each ship flies, handles, and has different weapon load out options. Know your ship, learn your ship, love your ship.......it will make you better.

Pretty much what those two previous posters said.
The empire doesnt care about you. Your just a name, a number, and a slab of meat in a uniform. WHich was one of the reasons i decided to go rebel pilot, dispite my love of the Tie fighter game series.
As for the Xwing comments:

The X-wing starfighter became the premiere Alliance weapon when the Empire nationalized the Incom Corporation. Technicians and suppliers in the employ of Incom were secretly sympathetic to the Alliance, and during a daring Rebel raid, they defected to the Rebellion, bringing the X-wing fighter prototypes with them

Also, if I remember right, most stormtroopers and flight troopers were clones. They were making them as fast as they died, anyway.

According to the jtl guide, Rebels make their ships out of looted, stolen and adapted parts. Yet a ragtag group whose desperately trying to survive have better equipment than the mighty Empire?
I'm not saying the Empire should have better ships which if you look at it they should but at least they should beon parand not way below.
Do you not know anything? Rebel ships have shields the Empire if their ships have any THEY SUCK @$$. Pluswith out shields that means less experianced pilots for the Empire. Rebel Ships=the best sheilds money can buy=Long lasting pilots=more ace pilot=more rebel kills in battle. To put it more simply the Empire doesn't care about pilots the Rebellion do care.

Shields, HA! The empire had much better weapons than the rebellion, red the books or watch the movies. The shields really only helped if they got a glancing shot. In the books or movies if a TIE got a good shot, it would go right through the shields and mess things up bad. Besides, who needs shields when you are a good enough pilot with badass ship (interceptor). In the books good pilots in the interceptor were just plain evil.

Imperial military has not been proven to be clones yet. But yeah the attrition model is the basis of the Imperial fighter tactics, and the rebel get more bang for the buck per fighter.

The moral of the story:
In the rebellion, you are somebody, you count. They want you and your ship to come back alive to fight another day.
In the empire, you are a statistic.

Well this same model exists today in the real world.
The USA makes the worlds most advanced fighter jets that take a team of people to get the pilot in and if it takes almost any hit systems will start to fail as its so packed with components.
Countries like Russia and China make cheap low tech fighters that can take a beating and keep going and the pilot can get in himself without any aid of any kind.
Are the USA fighters better, yes. But they aren't better enough to beat lower tech planes if outnumbered and every fighter lost costs them big. You can win a war with the best equipment or by having the most equipment.
So in this game the Empire vs Rebel ships make sense to some degree.

Not to forget you can also win with more highly skilled pilots. ![]()

Russia USED to do that, now, Russia makes several fighters that are in fact SUPERIOR to the F-22, did you also know that Russia has the most advanced ejection seat technology IN THE WORLD?

The Empire has good ships. Used correctly, that is.
In the Empire, they don't usually send fighters out on their lonesome. Unfourtunently, the Imperials in the game aren't as organized as in the movies, since people areoften logging off/doing something else, it's hard to organize a full squadron. One things I'd suggest to the Devs is to add "NPC Wingmates" that are purchasable, like Faction Pets.
