They are components used to craft more advanced medicines. See my Medic FAQ:

lol at the last post.

But to answer your question, no.

Food and drink are not at all necessary in this game. But can be beneficial.

I think they should add starvation to the game. Chefs would get really popular, really quick.

... What do I get out of Tailoring I?

More XP?

Less failures?

Any help can be of use.

Chance for sockets in tailoring line which increases the higher you go up

More colors

Experimentation points and less failure chances.

Ok cool but that brings up another question... what do sockets do?

It's a slot for stat and skill enhancements

Does anybody actually get socketed items coming out of Tailoring I? I'm not sure I've ever gotten a single one, which seems like something that should be tweaked a little. As I understand it, sockets are nearly automatic at Tailoring II, nearly non-existent at Tailoring I. Seems like the current T2 advantage should be split between the two.

To clarify on colors, you basically get three new color ranges. One's a very nice deepish red color. Maybe not as bright as the brightest reds you see in the game, but a gigantic improvement over that maroonish-purplish thing you get at Novice Tailor. There's also a genuine purple that's a bit pale, but a nice addition, and a sort of muted orangish-brownish-tan color that I haven't had much use for.

Once in a rare occasion, my first tier tailoring items would get sockets when I had tailoring 1
