Thread: The Solution To Space Mining

The space mining system needs to be re-designed. Only Y-8s should be able to mine and they have to do it in a new way. Instead of shooting the astroid you should be able to use a /mine command. This would initiate a docking sequence and you would deploy a drill and the ship would automatically harvest the resources it contains ( thats right... no more chasing astroids :-P ). Once the harvesting starts pirates would be alerted of your presence and immediatly hyperspeed to your location. Your crew would then mount the four working turrets on the ship and defend it while it harvests. As the ship gets closer to filling it's payload more and more pirates attack. This makes it necisary to have a crew of at least 4 to mount all the turrest, even more would be needed to escort and repair the ship mining diamonds or other valuables. This eliminates the need for forward guns. If your mining ship is shot down you lose half your payload ( so you cant do mining runs without a crew ). What do you guys think?

i would just remove it from the game, it's superfluous, just like droids, cybernetics, player mounts, and multiperson vehicles (including pob ships)...

Obviously it's too much work to make the above systems useful, just remove them.

I'd have to agree I just think having a flawed Y-8 is rediculous... all I need is my a-wing, nova, and Firespray. What does POB mean again?

I like this idea, but i think they should employ two ways of mining.... Keep the original way of mining with blasting the rock to bits, but only a small chance of pirates being alerted, and only a small yeild because your blasting the rock to tiny bits... then add the above mentioned way to mine, but add a very increased alert to pirates, but having a high yield of ore because your useing a drill to deposit ore directly into the cargo hold...

I quite like the idea. cutting off tiny chunks and running around is 1 man ship work. Docking and running full on excavation equipment is team work.


I'd also suggest that pobs can carry more than 5k of resources and make it so small ships can dock with it and transfer cargo.

And there again is another reason to be able to dock fighters with POB ships.....

It sounds like you essentially want mining in space to work approximately the same way as it does on the ground, but instead of dropping a harvester you dock your ship and start drilling. The reason space mining isbased on player, not character skill is because you don't need any skill points to be a space miner. Like the rest of JTL, it relies on your own abilities.

you didnt read the posts it seems.


I said, they should keep the current system. by way of that, you yeild less amounts of ore because it is less dangerous as only a few pirates spawn to fight off. Using the Y-8 or any other POB ship only, you can use a drill by "docking" with the asteroid and drilling. By way of this a larger yeild is gathered, BUT a Greater number of pirates will spawn making it more difficult. So, in essance, by mining with a drill, it would be more difficult than mining with lasers, because your defending your ship from high level, or highly concentrated attacks, making it harder to stay alive with your resources.

This idea of less chance of pitates coming as a plus to less yeild is kinda laughable. Their nothing but little ole teir 3's and if your using a POB ship your obviously certed to have shields and armor that can take whatever they hit you with.

Also the mining laser isnt a rock only gun. it can do plenty of damage to a fighter. In my rhikarixz (sp?) i load it up with one mining laser a tractor beam and a 3k dmg blaster and i can fill my hold in 5 min. easily. when fighters show up i kill em no problem. Pirates really are a minor issue, the biggest problem currently i see is when you get like 5 asteroid chunks shooting off in all direction its really easy to loose track of them. thus lower your yeild.

This way would not be necisarily easier because the longer your attached to the astroid, the more pirates agro you. However, I like the idea of keeping the old way of mining but the old way should agro only 1/3 the ammount of pirates but it would take longer. This would make the two systems balanced and give the player the option of preferance.
