The three factors determining success against both other Jedi and BHs are skill, crystals tunes, and template. Just for fun here (and to detract from all the whine posts) lets see what you Jedi think the breakdown is.
E.g.
perhaps success in PvP is
50% Crystals
40% Template
10% Skill
Of course, maybeI think that because I have no really well tuned crystals...

60% skills
30% template
10% crystals
Simply put, if you know what you ahve to work with, you can devise a tactic that will yield higher success. Crystals are a factor, but not the end all be all of pvp.

Tapes.
Let's include skill tapes in with crystals and just sort of consider it a generic "item" category.

You can be effective in PvP without even doing damage, thats why i put template mainly, if you have a bad template you wont beat even a bad player with the FOTM. I guess It depends how you want to be effective.

Against a good opponent, i would say:
30% Crystals
20% Template
50% Skill

Having 2 jedi. 1 with almost perfect pre-cu saber and mls/mhealer, and a post cu jedi with a crappy saber, mls/mdef, i would have to break it down to this
50% template
40% Skill
10% Crystals.
You can have better skills than your template, but if your template sucks compared to your opponent's, you are toast. There is no way I can beat the master def with my master healer but i can come really close. (I usualy lose because of low mind not action or force). The M.def deals out a hella lot of damage with a crappy saber and mls. Also theM.def has so much innate armor plus improved aura, that it is hard to get damage on them. Sure you can have skills but sometimes even they cant help you.
PS oh please soe gods let there be some love for m.healers in the future!

50% Skills
30% Crystals
20% Template
You have to have skills to be able to use your template right, but no-matter how good you are a jedi with a cruddytemplate/crystals wont win
**edit** HehArtus cimber had the same breakdown, i didnt even see that.

Make a 300DPS high FC and go fight a jedi with the same temp and a 650dps saber, he will pawn you unless its stevie Wonder playing the other jedi
