your idea of constantly reflecting light is how a laser works.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/laser4.htm

if you had anything inside the lasing core (like your mirror support) it would vaporize upon reaching the kind of energy a lightsaber would carry.

Heh, scince is great.. just had a physics lesson about light actually

Light is made up of either minute molecules of no mass (photons i believe?) or energy. In either case the original poster is correct, they would pass through each other, but not the lil mirror down the middle, that would be burnt like anything else; making LS duels very short

And to Enita, he was talking about the possibility of making a LS in RL, not in game.. in game sure, they r focused by the force e.t.c.... the force isnt real

The blade shudnt really require long charge up time as light travels.. errm.. at the speed of light, though i assume you said this because the light would increase in intensity as it reflected..

As a final nerdish point.. For the light to be strong enough to burn through solid objects it would be so bright you would be blinded by looking at the blade.. kinda bad for a weapon.

By my speculations on this subject, i have come to the conclusion that it is, technically and scientifically, possible to create a real-life light saber. But of course, there are EXTREME restrictions. They are as follows:

1- It would take a very long time of the saber being activated for it to gain enough strength to act like a blade.

Not necessarly. Light does not have to exist in strictly in the form you are considering, but light can be generated in many ways ... Plasma can be one of them.

2- Since we currently know no way to bend light without affecting the physical world, it is nearly impossible to turn light around and "suck" it back into the lightsaber, as the SWG explanation shows. But, it IS possible to create an extremely fine mirror which extends as long as the blade is expected to be, REFLECTING rather than "sucking" back into the saber. After which, just like in the explanation, the light is reflected again INSIDE the saber, and through the lens again, re-focusing the beam of light/laser and amplifying its strength. Each time is passes through it would add to its power until the light becomes dense enough to affect the physical world by burning it away.

This is also not true. We know (and have tested on a smaller scale) that blackholes, because of high intensity gravity, can bend light. Extrapolating that out, and injecting plasma into that example, a magnetic confinement (of plasma) is possible.

3- Sabers would turn on and off light a flashlight, not hum, and would certainly not go PPSSSSSSSHHHHEWWW when activated.

Using the example given above, the power source or the field generated itself could fundamentally (along with the plasma meeting air while filling the containment area) cause a sound simular.

4- Sabers would travel through other sabers, not impact like a sword.

Would depend. A containment field for plasma would be rotating proton over electron core. Not sure how that would react when in contact with a secondary field (nor the result of loss, potentially, of containment).

5- Sabers would burn through any object touched with no effort whatsoever. You can have it hang on a string and swing back and forth, and it will cut through steel. Light does not require work to move.

6- After each hit, a saber would lose some power because of the light reflected/absorbed by the object it impacted.

Nah, the 'beam' is powered .. thus constant. The only fluctuations would be in the powersource itself .. remember it would refill the containment area instantly.

Sorry all- im in 3rd period and hella bored...

nerds of the galaxies unite! we can figure this out if enough more of us swear off dating.

anyway the plasma idea is much better. I worked in a lab doing magnetron sputtering, where we would confine plasmas using magnetic fields and force the atoms to blast away a target material thereby depositing material on something we want to coat.

problem being that this process requires a vacuum, however with a few technological modifications I'm sure we can get over that.

basically a plasma is a cloud of ionized gas, and different gasses make different colors. Argon makes purple, Nitrogen makes bluish, and oxygen is reddish. of course once you get to high power they all start to look white.

so for a purple saber we have a hilt containing solid a solid argon core (another technological leap) with a high voltage grid near the exit point. the grid excites, which then sublimes the argon, forming a charged gas stream. once the gas leaves the hilt it expands, however the magnetic confinement field keeps it blade-shaped.

also the magnetic confinement makes it impossible for sabers to pass through one another because of differing polarities causing forces.

My god.. dubiousmastax.. you're a genius.

I hadnt thought about using plasma, mainly because i wasnt sure if the containment field could be small enough to shape as a blade (while remaining useable by a man)

Interesting post. However Star Wars is "Sience Fiction" not "Science Fact". I think the closest thing to a lightsaber ive had was a laser pen. oh and a big red stick i attacked my brother with.

I'm working on my plasma containment field right now. I've peeled the face off of my flat screen TV and I'm scraping the plasma into an old mayonaise jar.
