Thread: (Template Guide) The Dark Force Assassin
Master Force Wielder
Enhancer 4404
Healer 4000
Lightsaber 0400
Novice Defender
Overview
Make no mistake; this template is for eeeeevil. It emphasizes quick, explosive offense designed to catch an enemy by surprise and overwhelm them in a hail of damage. If you like the dark side image, and tanking bores you, this just might be for you.
Strengths
-The force is strong with this one: This is the most force you can get outside of a double mastery. Your regen and max pool will be good sized, allowing you to unleash torrents of attacks. This is a vital peice of the puzzle, since MPowers are the force-equavalent of a gas-hungry SUV.
-Irresistable force: You can dish out the punishment in great big spoonfuls and in all kinds of ways. Choke, improved lightning, improved armor break, improved power attack, improved head hit, and force KD should be the staples of your offense. Throwing Imrpoved force speed into the mix means that you can unleash these attacks in rapid succession. Against the vast majority of non-jedi, this set of abilities is nearly certain death if well timed and executed. Against other Jedi, you can also spatter in some force drains and force breaches in an effort to tear down your enemies ability to stand up to the hell you're throwing at them.
-Ninja tactics: Few templates better fit the ninja mentality than this one. You have the steath abilities of cloak, and the firepower to make good use of your element of surprise.
-Little downtime: With channel and meditate, you're not gonna be sitting on the sidelines long, waiting for your force bar to return from the dead.
-High surviveability: You won't always WIN, but you'll pretty much never LOSE a fight. Only the Great Dark Force Wielder template (/bow SWGHottie) gives you more escape options from a fight. Cloak + FR2 will allow you to exit a fight at will if things aren't going your way. Jumped by a BH? No problem, cloak and run. Or, take your time, get your food/spice in your belly, decloak, rip out his heart and show it to him so he can see how black it is before he has to clone.
-Good in a crowd: You get the improved root and snare from Enhancer to help with controlling the crowd, plus you get some useful area dmg/debuffs like KD, intimidate, and area lightning. If you pair up with others who have a similar template, you become a member of a very formidable gank squad, capable of getting in quick incaps on most player characters. Few templates can heal and heal fast enough to keep up with the damage you can lay down.
-PvE fun!: With the 1500pt heals and improved FA, you've got a perfectly viable PvE template. Also, there is no better exploration skill in the game than cloak. Walk around, see the sights, and enjoy yourself!
-Life never gets boring: One of the things that bored me to tears about my previous Defender-heavy template was the long, slow gameplay. Tanking, I discovered, is just not ME. With this template, gameplay is FAST. You either kill your opponent quickly, or you get the hell outta dodge.
Weaknesses
-No honor: Honorable fighting (friendly, prepared duels) is NOT your strong suit. Your goal in combat is to get quick damage spurts and quick incaps. You wanna catch your opponent unbuffed and unaware.
-Force hungry hungry hippo: Any template with Master Powers is gonna be chewing thru force. A template with Improved Force Armor and Powers will absolutely DEVOUR your force bar. You can't last in protracted combat.
-Dude, where's my saber crafting? You need a good saber to make this work, and you don't have the means to make one. Most of the folks I know who are in a template like this now have respeced from a lsxxx4 or MLS template, and brought their ADKd sabers with them.
-Fast and the furious: This playstyle is not so easy on your fingers. With a defender build, you sorta let your innate skills take care of things for you. With this template, you'll be a button mashing fool.
-Limited defense: Yes, you have 1500pt heals. Yes, you have improved infusion. Yes, you have +30 innate armor from Jedi initiate and nov defender, coupled with the option to turn on improved Force Armor. Yes, you even have force shield/feedback/absorb for force attack defense. But this is NOT a good defense, my friends. Its passable defense. Its enough to keep you standing for a couple minutes while you unleash hell on your victim. But eventually, that ole force bar will give out, as will your mind bar, and you're done. You don't have state defense, you don't have good defense mods, and you don't have real tanking abilities.
-Unmoveable object is still largely unmoveable: Jedi offensive skills are, in my opinion, still generally inferior to Jedi defensive skills right now (tho that seems to be changing fast), and a well-prepped opponent with a Defender heavy template can most likely weather the storms you throw at him. You generally won't be able to succeed in a fight against such a foe without a numbers advantage, tho you should rarely be killed by one.
-Broken: Many abilities in the Powers tree are in a poor state of disrepair. Cloak has bugs. Weaken is nearly useless. Force Throw and Mind Blast are of little/no use till states get fixed. The areas of effect on skills in Powers tend not to agree with lower versions of the same skills. Powers users can't kite with their attacks. DPS is low, especially against defenders. We can pray for fixes and balance adjustments, but you gotta make due with a largely limping profession tree for now.
Other Notes
- There are lots of possible variations on this template. The most common one I see gives up the x4xx enhancer line in favor of xx4x defender. I've also come across those who ditch the Nov Defender for one box of saber tech or melee/ranged defender. Thats cool, too. The same general principles apply.
- The new FRS is still a great big question mark. IF, however, you intend to go Dark, and IF the new FRS grants offensive Powers ability bonuses like the old one did, your template will benefit greatly from FRS involvement. The old system granted big bonuses to abilities like Choke.
- This should almost go without saying, but BUFF! You'll be healing and spamming attacks a lot, so I recommend using Booster Blue as your spice of choice coupled with other foods that pump up your mind and action regen (I like accaragam). Try some vayerbok and pikatta pie for helping to avoid getting hit as well as getting some defense foods to pull up your non-existant defense mods (this may be broken at the present time). Just before an offensive onslaught, pop a Deuterium Pyro to pump up your ranged accuracy. There is a fantastic post stickied on this forum for Jedi food advice.
- Have FUN! I won't lie to you: this template is not TEH EWBUR right now. But its hella fun. Enjoy it, and don't sweat the FOTM. Savor the victories, and never give anyone the satisfaction of killing you
Grinding it
There are lots of ways to go in grinding this template. For non-Jedi professions to start with, I'd recommend rifleman, and keeping a nice adv laser rifle on you. You don't really hit your offensive stride with this template till you get pretty far into it, so you'll need to lean on that rifle for offense in BH situations. Also, the ranged accuracy you get from rifleman will help out with landing your Powers specials. When training up your Jedi skills, I'd recommend focusing on getting some healing, basic force armor, basic armor break, and channel first. These will be your main grinding aids, and will be useful in BH encounters. After you've got those as a base to work from, then start adding the rest of the 2h saber line and force armor line. The other strategy you can employ, if you're really paranoid about BH attack, is getting up to cloak (FWx4xx) first. In publish20, this will make you untargetable and relatively safe from harm.
When you get to a point where you're able to manage BH situations, its adviseable to do the "throwaway" part of your grind; the saber tech line. At LSxxx4, you can build yourself a pretty good saber. Once you get there, go buy yourself a set of the best saber resources on your server, a few 14.5+ rating saber crafting tools, a 44+ rating crafting station, and some crafting foods (pyollian cake and bespin port). If you know anyone who has built a "saber crafting suit" with LS experimentation tapes, now is the time to kiss their butt good and proper-like and ask to borrow it for a couple hours. Sit down and start crafting, and don't stop until you've crafted SEVERAL of every variation lightsaber that you can possibly do. For each possible experimentation variation, craft different hilt styles that you think you might like later. You'll prolly end up with loads and loads of saber hilts in your inv. Pop em into your bank's saftey deposit box for safe keeping, and to avoid cluttering up your inventory. Then, shed a tear as you say goodbye to saber techniques.
Fighting BHs
For combat situations, there are a few things you should leave going at all times: Improved Force Speed, Improved Force Armor, Improved Force Infusion. I recommend setting up a little looping macro for force infusion, but the others you can do without macroing since they last so long (12mins on FSpd, and 30mins on FArm). When fighting Jedi, you should also be throwing up Improved Force Shield and Improved Force Feedback to combat force attack. Above all else, TURN OFF YOUR DEFAULT ATTACK. Yes, it means more button mashing. But it also means that you can cloak without worrying about fiddling with your auto attack breaking it for you. This is VITAL.
Against Bounty Hunters, I recommend that your opening move be to cloak. A BH's best weapon is initiative; dictating the terms of the fight by choosing when it happens, and being more prepared then his victim. Take it away from him, and make it your own. Take a look at your surroundings, and take a look at your opponent. Are you in a suitable environment? Generally, the best places for you to fight are in wide open, empty spaces where your area attacks will not draw in angry critters. If you aren't in a place like this, then go find one. Don't worry bout the BH, he'll follow you
As for the actual combat, well, if you do it right, he probably won't survive for the length of your initial move. And what is that? Choke. Choke early, choke often. First thing's first, tho: get within melee range before you decloak. Against Jedi, you won't always wanna do this, but against a BH, you definitely do. Once you decloak, I recommend the first thing you go for is a suppression followed by a choke. You got him right where you want him now, in saber range and losing 400health every few seconds. Get an armor break landed on him, then a KD, imprvd power attack, and lightning. If he's still alive at this point (which he may not be), alternate improved head hit and lightning till he drops, and reapply choke as needed. With your force speed on, the windup bars on lightning and power attack shouldn't be an issue provided that your opponent is rooted, but you probably don't wanna be using them back to back unless your opponent is KDed. If you find that your opponent is a healer-heavy build and is able to keep up with your steady damage output, then the key is to go for burst damage. Watch his health as you hammer him, and start getting a feel for when he likes to heal. When you sense that another heal is about to come, KD him, and open up hard.

Any suggestions for stuff to add? On my list, I've got:
- grinding suggestions
- potent combos
- helpful macros
- team tactics
This is the template I finally decided to go with about a week ago. Im going with the 0040 Defender route rather than the x4xx Enhancer.
Wow, didn't know I was an assassin!

"Assassin" was the first title that popped to mind which fit the bill. Other noteables that didn't make the cut...
- "Dark Force Miserably Dirty Ganking Bastage"
- "Dark Force Pool Evaporator"
- "Dark Force Would-Someone-Please-Fix-My-Damn-Mastery-Profession?!"
This is very close to the template I'm planning on using.
Master Powers/Master ENH/LS x4x4
I decided to drop the Defender and Heal in favor of faster DPS. Basicially, if I have to stop and heal, I better have FR3 and cloak engaged, cause I'm toast.
Great template and if I was going Dark Jedi, this would be the -exact- template I would go.
However, my planned template is that of LIKspikers, the Guardian one. This is one I had planned for long time, and will remain so. I'd like to see these 2 go at it, 1 on 1, be interesting - they are complete opposites almost. =)

If all else was equal, meaning that it was one on one, well-prepared, both sides buffed, both players of roughly equal skill, and neither player leaving the fight till one of them was dead, the Guardian temp would win way more than this one.
But, "all else" is never equal when it matters, and with cloak, this template has the luxury of choosing to fight only when the odds favor it winning
Definately!
