Thread: Jedi Underpowered? Deffinately!

I for one am totally disgusted with the ridicilous solutions the game designers think of to solve even the most primary of problems of this game. It's unbelievable how wishy-washy the designers are when it comes to making play systems decisions. First cloak is for escape, then it's not and force run was for escape and now force run isnt for escape either? Come on now folks, lets take a look at what's really happening here and call it what it is.

Population control for Jedi.

The powers that be recognize that there are too many Jedi for the timeline (and gameplay system design)., so being a Jedi has to be discouraged. Well, if being a Jedi is awefull, then their numbers will dwindle right? WRONG! Regardless how bad being a Jedi sucks, people are going to want to swing a lightsaber because, for a good porton of the player-base, that's what Star Wars is about. So rather than take a proactive approach to dealing with what seems to be an unexpected problem, the designers make the play experience for that profession unrewarding, overly difficult and completely frustrating. Jedi *ARE* underpowered. Not to other characters but to what they should be. Jedi arent even one half as powerfull as they are protrayed in both the films and in the books. This is unacceptable.

"Well they unbalance the game!", you may say. Well here's some thoughts about that. Keep these in mind the next time you think about complaining that Jedi are too powerfull...

  • Lightsabers should sever limbs on a natural critical hit (i.e. crit hit using headhit (instant death due to decapitation), bodyhit (severed arm) or leg hit (severed leg)). .

  • Lightsabers should be the most powerfull weapon in the game (not laser rifles)

  • A BH may be able to kill a fledgling Jedi but NEVER a fully trained Jedi (neither Knight nor Padawan)

  • ("Nobody can kill a Jedi." - Young Anakin Skywalker / Qui-Gon replies, "I wish that were so." Clearly here we see that Jedi are VERY VERY hard to kill but neither are they invincible. However, they are NOT a normal Bounty Hunter target.

  • "The ability to destroy a planet is insignifigant next to the power of the Force." - Darth Vader

If Jedi were even close to being as powerfull as they should be then all of the above would apply. But it does not. Why? Simple, PvP. PvP is no fun when there is a super class that can out fight all the other classes. so heres some solutions off the top of my head (albiet not that thought out) that would change the dynamics of the system and allow Jedi to become as powerfull as they should be and still not cludge PvP. (choose what ya like from the list and discard the rest but any of these changes could drasticaly enhance they way the game is played for both BH and Jedi professions. First off the global change...

Jedi vs BH is obscene. It should be Jedi vs Sith. Everyone know's it's Jedi vs Sith not Jedi vs BH. There are T-Shirts all over the place with Jedi vs Sith on them and I have yet to see one T-Shirt, coffee mug, backpack orschool folder with "Jedi vs BH" and a picture of Obi-Wan and Jango printed on it. C'mon you SOE/LA marketing/design people, think before you act. Anyway, that being said, here's the rest of the incomplete list of stuff that would most likely make the game better for everyone.

  • BH's no longer have to hunt Jedi as their primary high-end content. BH's now have the ability to hunt any profession that fails a mission for Jabba the Hutt, Lady Valerian or the Empire.

  • If a BH loses a fight with a mark (Jedi or otherwise) he/she suffers a loss to their investigation xp and is unable to take player missions until that loss is recouperated.

  • During a fight with a Jedi, players and NPC's have a chance of having their limbs severed as a result of being struck with a lightsaber.

  • Jedi are removed from participation in the GCW ( I know this one is harsh but it's the only seeable way to preserve everyone elses play experience).

  • ALL Jedi (even Padawans) are divided into light and dark sides and are permantly overt to the oposing side (the combatant/special forces rules could still apply here).

  • For those players that wish to hunt Jedi regularly, the Imperial only profession of "Imperial Inquisitor" should be added. This profession should be as difficult to obtain as Jedi but should be equal in power. "Imperial Inquisitors" should be Force Sensitive as well as have the ability to wield such weapons as: Force Pikes andForce Lances as well as the ocassional lightsaber (although they should get no bonus for using a lightsaber since they are not a Jedi).

It's ludicris that BH's even think about hunting a fully trained Jedi. It's insane to see someone that isnt even wearing cortosis laiden armor take 20 plus direct hits with a lightsaber from someone that is supposed to be a "Lightsaber Master". It's ridiculous that Bounty Hunters have nothing to hunt at high-end except a class that should decimate them with relative ease, and it's unbelievable that a solution to this long standing and game destroying problem hasnt been implemented.

All this being said, there are a ton of creative ways that Jedi could be brought to being what it should be without ruining the play of others.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

If you're asking if high level mobs have killed me, yes. I cant hold a candle to a Krayt and Nightsisters are nearly as tough. What are you trying to point out?

I would like to see more damage and/or ls damage back in the game.. i would like to see armor piercing in a way...

if a bh uses an armor... i want to be able to destroy the armor... if i db them.. i want them to have severed limbs etc... something that doesn't make us outstanding.. just a tad stronger but gives more feel to it....

When a non-Jedi profession (as my friend is using as a BH) has a modified DPS of well over 1000 and I as a fully trained Padawan (and Lightsaber Master) using a 4th generation saber with near perfect pearls in it only have a 644 modified DPS, yes, lightsabers dont do enough damage.

why do you compare dps when it is useless to compare ?

that comment solidifies your noob status. 550-650 or better damage ls > any rifle or gun or any post cu melee weapon vs. any good melee/jedi, when it comes to outdamaging at least. just because it has a higher dps doesnt mean sh**.

go play kotor. your arguing so much for authenticity to starwars, but you leave out the conflicting yet relatedarguement of how there were a handful of jedi alive during this period. so since they are more jedi, and they have effectively destroyed the timeline, you cant have them all be exceptionally uber. even if it is pve only, it would send the economy out of whack for regular profs.

Simple explanation;

DPS = Damage Per Second. That means if I do 1000 damage per second (DPS) it will take me 3 seconds to kill a lvl 80 player if they do not heal themselves. At 644 DPS will take 4.65838 seconds to kill them. So logic dictates that if two player each using one of the above DPS fight each other, the one with 1000 DPS will be victorious.

Of course this is offset by various things; heals, armor, mitigation, dodge etc. But obviously, DPS does work because it's a naturally occuring phenom in the play system (as it is in all play systems even though this one makes it obvious).

A bh should never be able to kill a fully trained knight you say, jango killed one on the balcony at the end of ep2. Grevious killed jedi and used lightsabers and wasent a jedi.

I sense much anger in you. And no matter how much you argue against it, the physical laws of the game do indeed produce a DPS for every player using every weapon. As for me being a noob, I think not. Not only have I been playing SWG since launch day,as a pre pub-9 hologrinder I've had the joy of grinding endless professions and then with only a few professions left I was forced to go through the village due to not unlocking soon enough. I too am unhappy with the number of Jedi and how easy it is to get now. But you cant take people's Jedi characters away just because it conflicts with the storyline/timeline. So Jedi needs to be more difficultto obtain and to be taken out of the public eye. This isnt a difficult problem to solve, especially if you think creativly. Im not trying to start an arguement, I just wanted to point out that Jedi truely underpowerd and that all this Jedi vs BH whining could be solved relatively easily.

Jango and Boba got torched in the movies. And Grevious might've killed lesser Jedi, but was also ripped up one on one.

And i agree with the direction this game has taken. Bounty Hunters should go after people dealing in the underworld. IE SMUGGLERS..

Jedi should battle Sith. No one else should be able to step to either one on one.
