Thread: SWG was the different MMPOG. Now, it'll be like all the others . . .

I wasn't excited by Everquest. Never wanted to be a wizard. Put WoW in that category, too.

Didn't really get hepped by beingmedieval in Asheron's Call. Put DOAC in that bag, too.

Anarchy Online is pretty good, but not enough people play it.

Got tired of looking at the blackness of Eve Online.

Earth and Beyond was too basic.

But Star Wars Galaxies was different. The wealth of races and professions and the economic system was so innovative! You could be something truly different in SWG! Something truly your own! Something more than a console-shooting, FPS idiot.

In short, SWG was the "Thinking Man's" MMPOG. Now, it will be just another game for 12-14 year old button mashers.

It's not for an old geezer of 49, like me.

Star Wars Galaxies coulda' been the greatest MMPOG ever. Instead, it will go down in history as the biggest failure in MMPOG history.

Five accounts cancelled here.

Good Night SWG, and Good Luck.

I heard a very good phrase which kind of sums up your reaction - and mine too:

'They took an online world and turned it into an online game'.

Yeah, that pretty much wraps it up. I just feel so darn old now, lol.

Perhaps. One thing's for sure - SWG won't be different anymore. And if it's not different, I have no interest in playing it just because "Star Wars" is in the name.

And I loathe console games. I'm a computer technician that builds and sells computers for a living.

But I'm not stupid, either. I'm not the market SWG is after. They are after the kids. Since they have lost the adults like me, I guess that's the only thing left - the quick, final 6-month hit.

Yep me too, I don't want flashy fantasy... I liked the 'realistic flow of swg'

And by this I include laughing my arse off when noobs would pick on dancers cos they thought there were cool, and would get trashed by a TKM........ I didn't agree with publishing professions nevermind levels, buffs, and what I had for breakfast

Welcome to kindergarden (I'm using an american word here because I'm english and I don't know if you'd understand 'playschool')

Since the posters in this thread seem to have enjoyed the old SWG for the same reasons I did - rich immersive world, many choices for combat, crafting, exploring, interacting - may I suggest you google a game called 'Dark and Light' or else look for its previews on www.mmorpg.com. It is a medieval fantasy game but it is apparently gigantic, 20,000 square miles - and beta testers I have talked to are just knocked out by its details (for example - there is atmospheric flight which allows you to have dragon vs dragon duels BUT if you fall off your winged mount and press space bar, as you freefall you can do backflips, somersaults, slow your flight 'Bond'-style and then open a parachute. This is just ONE detail of ONE aspect of the game). The free 'prelude' game of DnL is called Settlers of Gannareth and launched some time this month.

I probably would, but fantasy games are too dull for me. Everyone being a warrior, mage, and priest gets old. That's one of the things that originally drew me to SWG.

Exactly. SWG was different. It soon will be different no more.

True, true. That worries me too. But DnL does offer 14 professions to SWG's nine. That doesn't sound much but, at L20, each profession splits off into three specialist professions. Who knows? It might be as immersive as SWG once was - and there are very few really immersive games out there or, at least, I haven't found many.

lol i want to know this too? Does he realize that SWG was already seen as one of the biggest failures in MMORPG history simply because it has been in beta for 2 years and was steadily going downhill. The unability to switch proffessions now sucks but this new system will fix many problems (mainly the template crap). This can only help the game, cant hurt it cause it was already on the road to failure.
