No you dont have to be near your trainer to kill things, but that doesnt mean that you dont have to go through large cities to get to them still.
Each Jedi gets one trainer... it can be in a remote place, or in a very busy city. You dont get to choose.
And Kombat, honestly I like the idea too, but the class doesnt exactly live up to the idea. There are only 2 areas I have real problems with.
1) that every combat move uses force power and can put a bounty on your head... I just dont see how turning around, or kicking in the attack uses the force.
2) using your force powers in the middle of nowhere is somehow connected to you, and gets a bounty on your head.
The class is little more than hitting attack and then waiting for the mob to die. If you use anything like... a combat move some unknown force tells Vader/Sideious your name so they can put a mark on your head. Funny that it didnt work that way for all the other Jedi.
Using the saber should not get you a **edit**ing TEF, I remember the devs saying USING THE FORCE WOULD! I never remember them saying- "Using your saber will get you a TEF too"
Quit whining, I've mastered 10 professions as well and still no slot, in progress of mastering 2 more as well (have done all the basics at least once). No I am not jealous you got your slot already and I haven't because this character is only 2 months old, I'm on my way and when I get there you won't hear one word out of my mouth about what needs to be done to fix jedi or nerf everyother profession because I'm going to hide. I'm going to hide in the game and I'm going to hide from the forums.
Using your saber SHOULD give you a TEF because your saber is connected to you through the force, why do you think that you're more proficient when using a saber you created? There is a reason for it you know.
Now, with that being said, if you were out hiding on a remote planet away from all civilization like you are supposed to be then you shouldn't be having any problems. Your TEF lasts 5 minutes, guess what? It disappears after those 5 minutes and you're free to roam into town to get your training (unless there is a BH with you as their mark standing in that town and they happen to see you, then you're screwed but you knew that going in).
You should be able to avoid any unfortunate experiences if you just stay far enough away from towns and POIs as you can because players tend to hunt and gain xp in certain areas frequently. There's plenty of areas where players are nowhere to be seen.
One last thing - for anyone who threw the theory that Vader couldn't sense people using their force powers on other planets or whatever - Explain why there were only 2 jedi left before Luke came along? Maybe it's because Yoda and Obi were the only ones smart enough not to go grocery shopping (hunting) with their lightsabers. The only time you see Obi using his force powers in the movie are when he uses the mind trick on the storm troopers, alters the tractor beam, and possibly when he's fighting Vader. No other times. How do you know Vader didn't sense him using the mind trick? How do you know the Emperor didn't tell Vader to wait because Obi was on his way and he didn't have to bother hunting him down? You don't know these things, so stop acting like you do.
If I can get a TEF for trading with an overt player then you sure as hell can get one for killing gnorts with your saber. 'Nuff said.

omg, youre all whining! JEDI HAVE BUGS! and i dont give a **edit** whether you have it or not, i dont wanna play a broken profession. LAST I CHECKED this was the JEDI PROFESSION BOARD. GO to another board if you dont like it that we TALK about JEDI issues... you are all just jealous... get em forceismypath! you guys are the whiners, not us Jedi, were merely trying to give the feedback that is intended to be given in THIS DISCUSSION BOARD. **edit**

oh yeah and i agree that having a saber out should give a tef... saber = jedi as forcepower = jedi. I also think that if a MBH says hes an MBH I should be able to kill him. basically all pvp is my dream, no temp tefs. but i know this isnt possible.

we all know jedi is hard to get, those who have it are happy and those who dont are jealous ( like me! doh!).
jedi might be bugged because they just started opening, they'll fix it theres always bugs (commandoes, anyone?)
life goes on, this is just a game, dont use your time to fight other people on forums, enjoy the game! and have fun! forums are for making friends and helping each other out!
buy jedi academy, once you install the game your force sensitive character slot is unlocked! (i wonder why? lol)
btw, to that force guy who posted this originally: congrats on jedi, it'll get better and try to be nice to those that arent jedi... hehe. try cities like doaba geurfel (what ever that city in corellia is) or kor vella. also deeja peak in naboo, you know, places you would never go to when you weren't jedi...hehe. i've been to these cities, they're almost completely empty most of the time. oh, and cities on rori and talus are generally empty..except for the rebel and imperial outposts, of course.
Look to the storyline. Jedi are being wiped out. Use a light saber, you are a jedi. This means you must die. Hence the TEF. Jedi TEF stupid? No. You stupid? Absolutely.
