you unlock branches by doing quests. phase 1 will allow you only x amount of unlocks, phase 2 x amout, etc. when you unlock a branch go grind xp and convert to fsxp. and train your line up.

To anyone who are not absolutely sure about what they are supposed to do:
Do not use up your free unlocks and do not accept any of the phase 1 quests before planning your FS branch strategy. Reasons:
1. Once you take on a quest in the village, you don't seem to be able to take another during the same phase (3 weeks).
2. There are only 4 avalable quests (one per FS tree) per phase.
So if you rush and make a mistake, you will lose time and/or effort.
My advise would be to read the available (and at this stage somewhat incomplete) faqs and guiders. There is an incomplete general village guide stickied in TC galaxy forum by Swordsman Corr and another more complete one just listing quests by phase. The faq in the jedi forum also has a discussion of which FS branches are more useful for the jedi.
After that, plan your strategy:
1. Let's say you have 4 free unlocks, and 2 regular ones.
2. Pick one of the available branches in phase 1 and another one in phase 2. These will be your regular branches.
3. Do the quest for the first one now. Start filling the boxes by gaining regular xp and converting to fs xp, then training as needed.
4. Repeat for the second quest in phase two when it becomes available.
5. At some point after step 2, when you are confident about what you want, unlock _one_ of your free branches and train it. Repeat for all the free unlocks you have. Be careful not to lose the free fs xp you get by hitting the fs xp cap: let's say you have 100k of combat fs xp. If you use a free unlock at that point for a combat prowess branch, your fs combat xp will be increased only to the cap of 1,275k. In effect you will lose the 100k xp you had. Its better to chose a point in time where your relevant fs xp is zero. For the same reason, unlocking a second free branche of the same tree without training the first one will cost you 1,275k fs xp!
Let's repeat: first think, then act.

I finished the combat and the extra missions for it. Now even though I go through the leader the other mission givers say that I'm busy. That probably means I can't do jack before phase II.

I feel your pain. I did the same thing. Fortunately, it was on TC2 and I lost only a few hours.

Does doing the patrol missions for the Captain for a second time do anything or is it just a waste of my time?

Doing a 2nd set of patrols should give you the quest reward.

Lariah,
The good news is that, if you are AFK when the old man shows up for you, he will eventually come back. Well, technically, I was at my keyboard, but I was distracted by t.v. *twice* last night. It was the third time he showed up that I was actually paying attention and got to speak with him.
I shuttled between each visit, but the visits were only about 20 minutes apart.

This is a great idea I hope it stays alive..
I am not sure if this has been asked yet or not but every thing I have read says you need to compleate 24 boxes. As an example the combat tree has 18 boxes, novice through master. Where is the 24 boxes comeing in. Can we get a little clairification if anyone has any.

About the Sith Attack. I was at the Dant Imp Outpost. Sith jumped me while waiting for a shuttle, and the imps in the outpost obliterated them. No permission to loot.
Logged out, hoping they will attack again.

*If You Miss the Old Man or The Sith, OR If the Sith Drop a Bugged Disk*
- 0k, the old man came to a guildie of mine while we were on vent, he missed the old man because he was using his alt. After he discovered he missed the old man he logged of and then back on using /logout. IMMEDIATELY after relogging the old man reappeared.
- The sith act the same way if you either don't loot the disk or the disk is bugged. For me the disk was bugged so I relogged and RIGHT away the sith came at me, again I looted a bugged disk. The third time came RIGHT after the second, they came in waves and I looted a working disk. It seems when it's your time you can make them spawn by relogging or waiting a second.
- I found the two times I looted the bugged disk I killed the guy who DID NOT call my name first. The third time I killed the sith who called me by name and it said mission accomplished BEFORE I looted the disk, however the disk was not bugged. So I suggest killing the one who calls your name first, then the silent one.

I'm pretty sure you need at least 1 corvette too.
