Ive noticed that Improved Valor will make BHs miss quite a bit more. Also when coupled with Pikata Pie its quite effective. Im not sure if I would get Valor over Sap but what else do you have in Defender?

next time you're up against 2, 3 or more BH's, or an entire base of opposite factioned npc's along with players, tell me it's useless then.

As with every single skill in this game, there is a GOOD use for it and a BAD use for it. Situational use is something you learn. Some people find certain skills work better in some situations and others will list off an entirely different set of skills for the same situation.

What works for one person, isn't what works for someone else.
Learn your skills and use them to the best of your ability. Saying that one works better than another is simply a case of "i tried the other skill and didn't like it/i never tried the other skill so i only know what i know works for me"
I use valour a lot. I'm sure SAP would be just as useful to me if i had that instead/aswell as. But since i don't, all i can say is that for me, Valour is a wonderful skill and has kept me alive longer than i expected on many occasions.

Each skill has it's pro's and con's.

Sap = To me it seems to be great in a 1v1 fight. But if you're laying SAP on many opponents at once, it could turn into a large force drain. And by the time you've laid it on the last one, the first one has worn off and is recovered. Great in a Jedi vs Jedi fight

Valour = Great in large battles vs many ranged opponents. Blocks/Deflects shots from everyone. Great vs 1v1 ranged opponents too. Downside is the force cost to use it. In a 1v1, it's less of an advantage, due to the force cost. But in a large battle, it's more than useful, it'll save your life. Useless in a Jedi vs Jedi fight.

Huh...funny you should mention that about the BH's,because I'll stilltell you it's useless. /smirk

The only point I'll give you, is one that I mentioned myself. My mention of it only doing me good in PvE was an inference to what you're talking about it anyway. I'll admit, it's handy there. However, beyond that, I don't think it's worth the skill points. Considering I run into more melee' PvPers (TKM/ Sword/ Doc nonsense) than ranged, I remain firm in my opinion. The skill has its uses, but I rarely ever found myself needing it. It's great on the Avatar platform though, I give you that.

Don't forget the DWB. Another thing to point out is that it's a force cost saver for those without the luxury of master defender who have 0400 Enhancer instead.

I think the master defenders may take it for granted a littlebut it's a great skill.

Improved Valor is a great skill to use against ranged opponents, PvP and PvE. If I'm fighting ranged enemies and notice I am taking on a lot of damage, I hit valor and the damage I'm taking goes down considerably. This allows me to focus on offense.

The last 2 BHs that attacked me both died in 30-45 seconds (1 on 1 fights). I just put up forcespeed2, aura, valor, infusion, all my food, and went after them. To oneBH I did 2858 damage in the last 7 seconds of the fight. The other, I did about 4300damagein the last 9 seconds. They both died with 80%+ mind left because I didn't have to worry about healing myself. They could barely get a hit in.

The pre-CU saber helps a lot, too. I'm mdef, 0404ls, 4004e, 4100h.

Dont forget about Protine Wafers too.

Not to mention a good PSG. I only have +36 innate armour (being mid-grind) but I have a +1900 or soPSG I leave on and forget. I helped a friend take out Mellichae last night, and I was VERY surprised to discover the CL78-82 Sith were only hitting me for 7-12 points of damagewith ranged attacks.

What else?

Good question, Bac.

Here's a nice run down and summary of the Defender:

Passive Defenses are the Defenders biggest ally. Defenders don't get much in the way of powers to please the eye with, etc. Our strengths are in what we have within.
Melee Defense, Ranged Defense, State Defenses, Innate Armour, Force Power Defense
All of these are passive defenses that compliment the Defender perfectly. You don't have to spend Force to use them, you don't have to use action/mind to use them. They're just there. Always on.

The powers a Defender does have are powers to compliment others.
Dominate Mind - The greatest taunt. See someone in trouble in PvE. Use this to help save them. Pull the opponent to face you, allowing the original victim the chance to heal/run/take a breather. Instant rescue.
Force Aura - Improve your Melee & Ranged Defenses by 500 points instantly for a number of seconds. Extremely useful in both PvE and PvP. Combine this with Dominate Mind in PvE vs any mob and you are now the instant tank.
Force Valour - Improve your Lightsaber Block. Again, combined with the other two powers, you are now a formidable opponent vs anything using a Ranged Weapon to attack with. In PvP this is especially noticeable. Opponents will have an extremely hard time hitting you, and expend all their action pool in an attempt to lay on a few needed specials which you will most likely block/deflect or cause to miss. Using this to attract the attention of a large number of opponents in PvP and PvE will allow your friends/team to put their own skills to use much more effectively. The focus is on you, allowing them to take advantage of that and press their offense with much enthusiasm.
Avoid Incapacitation - Really a last ditch effort to bring down your opponent if you know you can't escape. Very very touch and go. Use it too early and things will go pear shaped for you. Use it too late and you find you don't have enough Force to activate it. A very hard skill to master, and far too easy to think you're safe from death after using it. Personally, of all the Defender skills, i feel that AI is the most over rated. Use it wisely.

All in all, Defenders are exactly that. Defenders. We protect others. We Defend others. Contrary to the names meaning, we are the Frontline of a fight. It's our job to hold the fight at bay, and prevent the tide of battle from washing over us and into the team behind.

Wow. Great post Ragman. Says it all, eloquently.
