they seem to be 100% random as far as i know not sure if anything really changed post cu i have had tons of "good" pearls tune crap and fair crystals tune -8 fc 45 max wich is still the best crystal/pearl i have in my saber... but yes prems and flawless tend to tune better i hear

They used to, pearl drop screw up fixed that one, even premiums only tune to a 'good' stats/

I've been told yes. But it seems that my character has the WORST luck tuning crystals/pearls. Before I get flamed, I've tuned NUMEROUS in all levels of quality and can't get decent tunes. I have one pre-CU pearl in my saber that tuned at 105.
I looted pearls the other night with another jedi (total of 10 good pearls). I took 5... he got 5. My best tune was like 55. He got his tunes 100+ in almost all 5 of his.
My alt looted 10 fair crystals yesterday. I tuned all 10 that turned out to be all garbage.
Luck just isn't with my jedi. I'm not having any fun playing him, can't stand up to BHs, and well.... BAD LUCK!!!!!!!!
I'm shelving my jedi. He's broke from over-inflated pearl purchases, out of desparation to get a decent tune to be able have a fighting chance. I'm full template... yet I swing a noodle.

Yes but I swear the devs changed it so that it's very rare to get one over 90 now. I used to get decent tunes allt he time, but I've gone OVER THREE DARN WEEKS WITHOUT A SINGLE TUNE ABOVE 80!!!
Myself and others in guild have been tuning dozens trying to get a good tune. That's why I think they changed it. Nothing like keeping our lightsabers weak as usual.

I tuned 72 pearls/crystals without getting a 100 or higher, so I guess that I'm really unlucky.
Out of 16 quality pearls, 13 good pearls, 21 quality crystals, 18 good crystals, 2 fair crystals and 2 poor crystals, most of mine were in the 35-60 range, with a few in the 80s to 99.
I actually had the poor and fair crystals tune better than most of the others, just to show that tuning is random and makes absolutely no sense.
Out of 16 quality pearls, 13 good pearls, 21 quality crystals, 18 good crystals, 2 fair crystals and 2 poor crystals, most of mine were in the 35-60 range, with a few in the 80s to 99.
I actually had the poor and fair crystals tune better than most of the others, just to show that tuning is random and makes absolutely no sense.

Yes it is I have tuned 2 good quality pearls for over 100 dam, 1 for 85, and one more in the mid 90's. I only had to tune about 15 good pearls to get those, I wore my robes, I was inspired, and I was meditating at a shrine (Rather these things work or not, This is just what I did), and one more thing that I noticed, the stats got better the more I tuned in succession (maybe another coinsadence). I hope this helps, if not then I apolagize in advance.
My heart goes out to all those that spend millions on prem pearls only to get tunes lower that any I have ever gotten on a good pearl. Personally I would not even waste my money and just buy good pearls.

i have 2 on scylla 112 -7, they were pre cu. i sold most of the untuned pearls and crystals post cu. but im changing servers and making a new jedi on a more populated server. so, i guess i will start collecting them and save a couple of hundred. wish me luck.

Good luck. If you come to Bria, let me know if you need help. I never have credits, but I have a pretty good KSE and am fairly adept on ground. It always helps to have friends to help out (I'll be stuck on RoTW quests for a while though).

YES! I just tuned a good quality pearl that I looted from a juvenile krayt last night and it turned out with 117 damage, -.13 speed and -5 FC. I tuned another one for 90 damage, -.13 speed and -1 FC. Tuned two others for 44 and 50 with terrible FC and speeds.
needless to say, I took my 66 dam, -.09, -8 crystal out of my saber and replaced it with the 117 one. yeah, I'd take an increase in damage and speed at the cost of5 extra force cost 
Anyway, of the last 20 pearls and crystals i've looted in CU and tuned, about 8 had better than 80 damage with 2 over 100. I have yet to tune any CU stuff to have better than -.13 speed though that I recall. My pre-cu pearls all tuned to -.25 speed or better, but most of them have terrible FC.
From my tuning experience, I'd definitely say that luck plays a huge role as with anything in SWG it seems.
Also want to add, when I tune, I'm never inspired, never wear my robes, not in a research city, not at a shrine. About the only thing I do is have my saber equipped (I always have it equipped though) and I only tune in the basement of my naboo home in a room that I made my meditation chamber...not even my alt is allowed in there...LOL

Yup! Did it last week with a quality pearl! 105 damage and a -7 FC!
