Thread: IMO...Jedi in SWG = very Starwarsy.
1000 JEDI per server? Is this number correct?
I thought I was being a little overboard saying the are 500 in the galaxy.
Anyway, I would whole heartedly agree that the visible "force users" we see showing off in the star ports are not adding to the game. (That’s putting it lightly)
I think the answer is in Role Play. Simply treat them as force using commoners who happen to have found a light saber (or false light blade). I could never call someone JEDI who didn’t act the part. I also treat those calling themselves Sith the same. As some one who’s delusional. This is a big galaxy filled with numerous kooks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone calling themself a Vader or Obi-One clone. Like in real life I simply choose to ignore them.
A dark/light JEDI (in character) I can accept but one that would be in (true) fear of the Empire.

Move the timeline to post-ROTJ....problem solved. Both Jedi and Sith would be coming out of hiding.
Wrong
You will still have a problem with 95% of the server wanting to be a Jedi or Bounty Hunter. Like I said in a previous thread that is not much of a game.
Take for example, a fantasy mmorpg. Imagine having 15 classes at your disposal, yet 95% of every server is playing a Paladin or a Necromancer. Not very much fun is it?
Doesn't matter if you push the game back 2000 years or foward 50 years. The fundamental flaw lies in the Jedi being the number one favored class above all others and all classes are merely a pawn to be used to grind to that profession.
Jedi is not an end game if it takes only 18 weeks to get it.

No..it's not wrong. It solves the continuity issue.
I'm not addressing the issue of everyone wanting to be Jedi or Bounty Hunter. In that sense I agree with you completely. To argue in favor of my own profession though, the primary "reward" for being a Jedi nowdays is simply that you're a Jedi. A melee stacker (and there are still plenty of them)with the proper build is much more devastating in combat....now THAT is a problem...and in my opinion is larger than that of Jedi overpopulation.
Moving the timeline forward would make the presence of Jedi more palatable...you can't aruge that.

IMO Jedi aren't that star warsy. The biggest reason? If I swing my saber at an acklay, a Gorax, a Krayt, a SBD, etc... It should be losing limbs or dying. I highly doubt that everyone has cortosisin theirarmor, on their weapons, on their bare skin for that matter.
A blaster bolt to the head should put down any fool with a powerhammer, but this doesn't happen either. I agree with you to an extent, but you can't rationalize any of this in an MMO...which is purely based on numbers. :/

to serve a continuity issue then yes, i do agree with you. However, I just wish something could be done to make all classes desirable

There’s something about the Star Wars mythology that makes people take ownership of it. Everyone’s an expert.
With that being said I’ll give it my 2 cents.
It’s true that the first movies hinted to there only being 3 JEDI left after the purge. With Luke being the last. Return of the JEDI sounds like a title that says "Luke will return the JEDI to the galaxy". This would lead a purest to believe that there should only be one in SWG.
I believe they would be wrong and here’s why.
In the books Luke is told by Ben that he’s not the last of the old JEDI but the First of the New. Sure this isn’t cannon but it was written and Lucas approved way before EP1.
Ok so you want canon.... EP3 gives us out best example of "others". Ben and Yoda head back into the Temple to warn the JEDI not to return...this alone is reason enough to believe that there are others.
But the biggest reason is just Pure Logic..... In a galaxy with billions of planets and trillions of people, 500 JEDI could easily SwgClient_r.exe: stage.139296
unknown location : FATAL be5fbc55: ExceptionHandler invoked
hide indefinitely. We must be weary of what the Movie characters said. We can not assume that what they said is (Star wars) Law. On many occasions they where wrong.
Vader "Obi-Won has thought you well". (Remember it was Yoda that thought him...not Ben)
Ben "That boy is our only hope" (Yoda set him straight)
And the biggest one;
Yoda
"If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny" (Anakin Skywalker proved him wrong)
PS: There is however Only Two Sith. This is not only explained in both the Movies and books But it's explained in great detail. Other then the wanna be Sith Thugs in the village I fail to see any way of role playing this.
How amny jedi are in hiding from the empire on remote planets pretending to live normal lives? That's yhe problem. None of the jedi are actualy hiding. They're Har Kirshna Pajama Starport Glowbat Ravers showing off their 1337 d00dn355. If Saber tef was re-instituted, or say a level 100 NPC Imperial Jedi Hunter spawned on top of a jedi every time he entered a public city while wearing a robe or having a saber equipped then no one would have a problem wih the jedi
How sweet it would be...

I have to disagree
Seeing this many Jedi in Star Wars with Luke just having defeated the Death Star makes no sense. If they made it around KOTOR then it would have made sense(then they would have to take out othe Imperials...and then not a whole lot of people would have played it).
Seeing 80% of every server as Jedi is not my idea of a mmorpg. That's like running around a fantasy mmorpg and seeing 80% of every server holding nothing but Paladins....and 15% who aren't Paladins trying to grind to become a Paladin. The other 5% are maic users, priests, etc
That's what it feels like.
Also, those "1000 Jedi hiding out in the remote outreaches of space" are actually in front of every major StarPort showing off their glowsticks dueling each other.
/agree
The number of Jedi never bothered me, but rather it is is this aspect. The Jedi aren't hiding...they're quite visible, and therein is what makes this game decidedly NOT like Star Wars.
Sure, everyone is allowed to enjoy their 15 bucks a month, but therein lies the problem. Some people enjoy their 15 dollars by saber-waving in front of the starports, while others enjoy their money by trying to immerse themselves in Star Wars...and all of the glowsticks kind of ruin that.
While I hold no personal grudge against saber-wavers, I can never side with the beligerent anti-roleplayer ones. For anyone who says that the Jedi should be in hiding (which I do agree with), the 1337-dudes scream and whine about how "You can't tell me how to enjoy my 15 dollars a month. I ground my Jedi and I'm going to enjoy it." Now, they're correct in saying this, but, they're completely self-centered because they in fact ARE ruining someone elses 15 dollars a month, but narturally, they don't care about this.
I didn't mean to go off on the rant, but it just kind of happened. If this was a KOTOR or post-Episode 6 timeline...you wouldn't hear a peep out of me, but I really can't even remotely think of a way in which this game is truly... Starwarsy.

yuo also have to remeber that not ALL of said "1000" jedi are on at the same time on my server ill see maybe 10-20 in a given day and not all the same Jedi

So basically since the 1000 jedi all turned up on a handful of planets wouldn't they kinda stand out? The emperor and vader themselves are in the area shouldn't they notice all the flashlight waving imbecile and ordered immediate action as jedi are a threat to their power? shouldn't the death star project be stepped up right about now and those handful of planets destroyed?
your idea that maybe 500 to 1000 jedi survived throughout the galaxy might be pluasable but they all wouldn't hang out on the same 10 planets so for the game jedi are kinda disruptive to the star wars feel.
